Sorry Joekicker , I would have to disagree with about eucalyptus being okay to grow in Thailand or anywhere else for that matter. have a look at what damage they have done in South Africa, Kenya ,India, Mexico , to name just a few places where they have been an envirionmental disaster. Sure they provide good , quick timber but they will change the whole eco system in the localised area which will result in long term envirionmental consquences. Another Australian tree causing massive envirionmental damage around Rayong is meleucca quinevira which is drying out natual wetlands (same damage as they have caused in Florida). As an Aussie and a professional Horticulturist I am embarrassed by how this australian species behaves outside of it natural habitat . I would even venture to say that it was one one the first major envirionmental weeds in Australia . Don't get me wrong, the smell of crushed eucalyptus evokes in me an emotional response only a aussie knows .

 

But to get back to the original question , there are a couple of tree crops that I have thought about trying myself in Thailand if i ever retire there and I believe they could be successful in Thailand and one is olives which are so goddammed expensive (pang mak mak ) ,plus, what is a pizza without olives.

Also avocardos would be worth exploring if you have well draining soils ( Phytophera root rot being a major enemy of avocardos ).

Thanks for the advice everyone but the rubber trees we put in last year have been so successful we have decided to stick with them. Last year when we planted we were going to have a well dug but it was too expensive so without irrigation i did not think they would grow but of all the land planted last year ours are the best so stick with what you know. The land we purchased last year has a pond and we have bought a tractor so we can take better care of them, so its rubber trees with bananas in between and we are leaving about 15 rai for papaya and bamboo (eating kind). Thanks anyway and any new advice is always welcome.

Anyone have any idea how much the outlay is prior to growing rice ?

 

I have been quoted 35,000bht to seed, fertilize and prepare 8 rie for a crop. This seems a bit excessive to me.

I would say that is in the ballpark little one. This is probably the worst time to start a rice farm from scratch in history. Farmers have sold all their seeds, fertiliser is through the roof and rice is the new "in-crop".

Boy, that'd be a shame with a nice plot begging for crops. Get her to have a chat with the most local bank, and heck why not - the fertiliser factory folks, see what they say about it. SUPPOSEDLY government banks are prepared to help out this crop year.

It is already growing rice. Her sister is using it. In the last 6 months, she has paid off all her bank loan. I want Si to take over the growing. Either that or hope the factory alongside wants to expand. It has roads on three sides with our field being the only open area to expand. Unless they relocate a road I suppose.

 

The 35k bht, I assume, would be for the seed, fertilizer, and a cultivator to turn over the soil. I don't think it includes the Comb' Harvester for the finished article. This still sounds a bit pang to me for 8 rai.
