Qatar Airlines

Recommended Posts

Looks like I'll be back in LOS in 2 weeks time and the cheapest option is £475 with Qatar. Anybody recommend them ? Also, is Doha a dry airport or is alchohol available ? Any info is greatly received.

Thanks,

Dode

I flew with Qatar in January. No problems at all and some very cute air hostesses as well. The food was a cut above the normal airline fodder. Yes, I can recommend them.

Why not try Travelbag when looking for flights? I got a £386 deal with Royal Jordanian Airlines for January 2008 although it was booked some time in advance.

I don't remember whether Doha was dry or not. I only had a short layover anyway so it was not a problem.

Doha Airport is dry 100% ....... at least for the next couple of days until the end of Ramadan.

Beyond then, the biz class terminal has plenty of booze. Can't say I ever saw a bar in the normal terminal.

Should have been clearer. There is alcohol in duty free. And the planes are not dry. Your right no bars in normal terminal.

The airline is quite good ,they give you plenty to drink on the plane (if you ask) ,but, the airport at Doha is dry and devoid of anything to do other than free Email ,and you have to queue for that .I flew with them last year and would again if the price was right ,but, I would rather go to another airport if I had a long layover as there is nothing to do in Doha.As has been said join frequent flier programme to get extra 10 kilos baggage allowance.Take a good book or 2 if you have a long layover at Doha which is a common occurrence on the gatwick -BKK flight.

Thanks for the info guys. I won't need to stop in Doha now as I've managed to book on EVA for £473 departing on 24th October. See you on the 25th if you are in Fun Town.

If you dont mind a 2 flight trip (like myself) I consider Qatar to be the best by far.

Bearing in mind they are one of only four, 5 star airlines thats not surprising.

The entertainment system has to rate as the dogs bollacks and rarely are their flights more than half full.

Have just returned and on the Bangkok-Doha sector about 20% full and on the Doha-Heathrow leg there was just 38 people on a A340-600 !!

Asked one of the cabin crew if this was normal and she said that normally this flight (QR001)is rarely more than 20% full.

I wouldn't take that as being the norm. Qatar's average load factors to/from LHR, MAN and BKK are all in excess of 80%, hence the 340-600 on the LHR route, MAN shortly being upgraded to A330-300 on all seven days and the 2nd daily flight to BKK being introduced. Whilst the entetainment system is very good it is some way behind what is offered on Emirates and Singapore's newer aircraft.

If you are travelling via the middle east in economy the biggest difference is in the seating layout. Qatar is 2-4-2 (330), Etihad 3-3-3 (777) and Emirates a ridiculous 3-4-3 (777).

Am sure you are right-maybe the 4 sectors I flew were at low loads due to low season ?

Whatever I was impressed.

If you have travelled just recently it would haave been in the middle of Ramadan.

I am facing a 6 hour wait between connecting flights in December. This was one of the cheapest flights available .

When I connected through Bahrain before I noticed that there were a lot of people having a kip on the floor. Does this happen in Doha a well?

Does the airport authorities allow you to leave the airport and can you book a hotel through the airline so that you can rest for a few hours rather than staying at the airport?

If so are there any cheap recommended hotels near to the airport?

Suggest you email the airline directly giving your flight details etc and see what they say.

They have responded very quickly to any query I have had.

When Qatar were offering flights for £380 in the summer the planes were full but Etihad have been undercutting them recently which is probably why the planes were less full.

I found the seating better with Qatar,Etihad had the better entertainment system,I preferred Doha to smoke filled Abu Dhabi airport-all down to price really as both airlines offer good flight and connecting times.

Abu Dhabi airport has been smoke free for at least the last 16 months although they have small smoking booths available.

I used Etihad to MAN in Feb/Mar of this year. I didn't have time for much of a look around in Abu Dhabi but I'm pretty sure I had a ciggie in one of the coffee shops in the rotunda part of the terminal.

I flew with Qatar in March of this year. Great airline. I liked the price too. £316 Found best way to get good deal, is never give the dates you want to go. Add a few days to either end of your trip, then suggest that you'd be willing to fly on alternative days, now giving your true dates of travel. Surprising how much difference this makes to the price.

Qatar are ok in business class but economy looked a complete zoo. All the flights I took were packed, even in business. The premium terminal in Doha was fine but there was no priority boarding at heathrow or Bangkok. You also had a ten to fifteen minute bus journey from plane to terminal in Doha.
