English Food

Recommended Posts

One day I would like to retire in Thailand. When I’m retired I will have time to do all the things I couldn’t do back home in the UK. I will have time to cook good food, suffice to say I only have a few Thai dishes that I actually like:-

• Masaman curry

• Yen tafo – Red soup with beef and noodles

• Yellow curry

• Thai rice

Here is a list of things I would miss if I lived in Thailand

• Pickled Onions

• Sauerkraut

• Butchers homemade sausages

• Colman’s mustard

• Custard

• Paxo stuffing

• Brussels Sprouts

• Marmite

• Semi skimmed milk

• Meat balls with gravy and onions

• Horse radish sauce

• Mature cheddar cheese

• Quality beef steaks

• Yorkshire Pudding

• Toad-in-the-hole

• Stella Artois

• Lamb

• Coq au vin

• Pork Scratchings

• Runner beans

• Peas

• Milk Shake

• Hinze Baked Beans

There are probably many more I could mention if I had time to think about it.

So I guess the real question is:- Are all of your culinary requirements met whilst living in Thailand and if not, what one food would you like to be available to you?

Not sure about all the items, but I have seen pickled onions, Colman's mustard (expensive), cheddar cheese (all cheese here is pricey), beef steaks (Australian - so make of that what you will :clap1 ), lamb, peas, baked beans (haven't seen Heinz but I'm probably looking in the wrong places). Sausages are available but I haven't seen the specific variety you mention.

Quit a few of the other items you mention will be readily available though I think pork scratchings will be a tad expensive if they can be obtained in Thailand.

Edit in -

At present, I eat out 99.9% of the time but that may change when I move to my new condo at the end of next month.

If you like Campbell's soups, they're available here.

I think you will find pork scratchings on the street carts, no? There's certainly no shortage of pigs and pork and being nothing goes to waste....

My item to miss would be Taylors Pork Pies from Darlington. Took a quick Ryanair flight from Girona to Teesside last weekend and picked up 20 and stuck 'em in my bag - flight cost 16 euros return (great deal). No Fish and Chips here in France but in Pattaya there is the Pig and Whistle and in Jomtien Simon's (best I found) for a treat.

Yorkshires are pretty good at any carvery Robins Nest, Pig and Whistle, Queen Vic - Nodelroh swore by them last trip (couldn't get enough - and that was just the Yorkshires!)

That said - give me noodle soup or jim-jum with a cute TG doing the ordering any day....

Bon appetit

Andy

Not at all, Thai ones are a regular addition to 'Nam Prik Ong', and as mentioned, readily available in the inevitable plastic bag with the impossible elastic band. In fact I now prefer them to UK style as they are just the skin and fully rendered. Last time I tried some 'UK style' I found them disgusting, hard, overly salty and horribly greasy.

Next to the food plaza in Carrefour Mall, they often have Northern food on sale, plenty of fresh (they must be) pork scratchings, and very good Chiangmai sausage.

A lot of what you are looking for is available at the Villa Market on Sukhumvit Soi 39 in Bangkok. It is expensive though. After you have been here awhile a lot of the Thai food that tourists get off on starts to taste the same and gets very boring. I make many trips to the Villa to stock up on western foods.
