Shopping Question.....Internet Supplies

I am giving up on my Edge Internet, so now I have to go buy a wireless router,

 

 

I was guessing Tuk Com, but is there anywhere else in the Pattaya Area....?

 

If it is only Tuk Com, which floor and does anyone have a stall/shop they would recommend?

 

Will I also need to buy a splitter to separate the Internet from the phone line, or is that incorporated in the router?

I've seen them in every Internet mall, Central department store, you name it.

 

If you are getting in a new line, the company you get it from should give you one - TOT, True or TT&T usually do.

I bought a wireless router from Wattana on Central Pattaya Road - opposite side from Carrefour and up a bit towards Sukhumvit. This plugged into my modem from TOT - have still to try it with my new TT&T internet connection.

I didn't get any packet. TT&T said they had routers, but not wireless.

 

I paid money, I received a printout with some details and password, no new line involved. Advertised as MaxNet. The office told me it will be ready Monday at 5pm. I was also told I could get my own hardware.

 

I don't believe I need a modem.

 

Does anybody know if I need a splitter ...... perhaps easier to just go to to Wattana on Klang, I hear good things of them.( I am the worst, someone with a bit of an idea, but hardly knowledgeable.)

Sorry, I meant in the box with the router. But do check before you leave the store, splitters are only a few baht and it's maddening to have to go back.

MaxNet is getting VERY bad press for any speed below the 1,000kbps service, which is getting very good press. Just FYI. The Thai techie press is full of this at the mo.

Yes, you'll need a splitter, which allows you to use the phone/fax and the Internet at the same moment.

remember all wireless routers are not equal. The ones with the 3 aerials at the back will give you a greater wireless area.

 

I bought my router in the TOT office when i signed up and it came packaged with 2 splitters.

 

Recently my TOT service has been abysmal. Late postings of their bills are now norm and any probs means at least a week wait for anybody to come out.

Presently TOT customers are paying 1000baht for 1mb service.

 

I popped into TT&T to check out their deals and you can get 4mb speed for 1000baht (and all for a connection charge of 200baht) sounded a good deal so they are currently doing a line /area check which will take 7 days.

Increase the upload speed to 1048 and there is another higher range of prices.

 

It is only when you press them that you 'learn' you share this 'speed' with 20 other users, or 10 for Premier Class. Anyhow, I have yet to get it to work so the proof will be in the pudding when I get into it.

All DSL is shared, everywhere. That is not necessarily a problem - or, or course, it could be. It's not the number of people on your "party line" so much as their surfing habits - something you can't know when you join.

Yes I might be on a shared line with 19 guys who video conference and download movies overnight.

 

I got my hardware, pleasantly cheaper than I expected. Plenty of choice, finally got a Belkin from the big store at the top of TukCom. Splitter and a bit of telephone extension too. What fun unpacking it, wiring it together and programming it. It was surprisingly straightforward. All the information I was given by TT&T slotted in.

 

Of course it doesn't work.

The Pattaya office refuses to answer the phone.

Other numbers I call, if they answer, tell me they will call back,but never do.

have u managed to get them to explain how they can offer a 2/3/4mb service on a line that currently shows up as only capable of 512 kb/1 mb?

 

the tt&t deal looks good value and is being heavily marketed where I live but they seem to be a bit iffy when it comes down to explaining how they're going to achieve the service.

... but apparently even that is not as iffy as trying to get more than about 16kbps actual download speed. They had a huge collection of letters in the Post Database last week or the week before, just for example.

A bit like selling aeroplanes. Sell them first, struggle or miss on the promises later. I'm still using my Edge.. the router flashes away in the corner trying to get a connection.

Well after a bit of messing about..I am online...some routers are problematic, my Belkin would NOT sync... my D-Link does but I had to make some changes to the default settings.

 

As to Maxnet....I haven't sat around like this since dial-up. It really slows down at peak times, but is better than my old Edge. And so it should be at 3 times the price.This country is in the stone age when it comes to internet connection.
