Which way to go ?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am trying to book a flight from Vancouver to BKK on the 4/5/6 ish of Jan for 1 mth returning 4/5/6 ish of Feb.

The last 4 times doing this trip I've gone with EVA, Vancouver-via Taipei-BKK, but with plenty of time for changeover at Taipei.

I have just found a flight with Cathay Pacific for $350 less going, Vancouver-Hong Kong- BKK but the changeover is only 1hr 5mins. Is this enough time to get from gate to gate in HK and what happens if my first plane is late/delayed and what are CP like to fly with, seats, movies, food etc ?

Appreciate any advice. Neil

I believe that if you're flying with the same carrier on both legs and the first leg is late, the carrier will be responsible for getting you to your destination on the next available seat presumably on their own aircraft or possibly a partner airline. Never happened to me but has always been at the back of my mind.

I think you might be pushed to make it. I had one and a half hours at Changi to make a connection when flying with Singapore airlines and I only made it because the BKK flight was at a remote stand and I caught the last (of 5) buses. I didn't hang around not even for a smoke but it was a long walk, amazingly my luggage made it.

stevoh.

I think you could be pushing it. All you need is a slight delay on your first flight and you could miss your connection. You might be lucky and get on a later flight but there is a risk that they could be full.

Don't worry as Cathay (CX) have 5 flights a day to Bangkok

The short connection is the last flight of the day.

I wouldn't worry too much ......... if the worst comes to the worst, Cathay will put you up and fly you to BKK the next morning.

As a retired airline employee,I can say they are responsible to feed, house, and clothe you if you miss your connection (ok,mayabe not clothe you).God knows I made enough of those vouchers over 32 years to do so for all forum members.

Did I mention Northwest is officially a subsidiary of my former company,Delta Air Lines,as of today. The NW name will cease to exist w/i 18 months.

No definately not a enough time between layovers. Don't worry about the flight out of Van. being late departing. They can make up the time lost in flight. But the bags are a bitch to keeping up to you. They travel less distance at the airports between terminals but have a way of getting tied up on short turnarounds.

Flown YVR to BKK many times and in the end I found the Vancouver/Narita/Bangkok connections the best all around. (Air Canada, Star Alliance) And you arrive early enough in BKK to still have a good day and take your time getting to Pattaya. AirCan may be a little more expensive this late in the game but worth checking out.

And if you get a Star Alliance card you can start collecting points with Thai Airways, Lufthansa and many more. Takes no time to build up 80,000 points that will cover a free return flight almost anywhere in the world. And if you reach Gold status then all the lounges are available with free booze, food and internet. Not to mention not having to wait in the lineups at check in and boarding. Just walk straight to the front and show them your card.

After a few trips to Thailand you can get one for free or bring a friend.

Sure takes a lot of BS out of travelling.

BTW I lived in White Rock many years. Ever get there?

Thanks again for replies , unfortunately, being the knobhead I am, I didn't realise until they wanted my CC details that the price was in US dollars and what with the Xchange rate at the moment US/CA, it works out the same price as EVA, so I am going to take the EVA flight.

Bizzjet, where do you book your tickets, YVR-Narita-BKK ? On internet or travel agents ?

I've tried getting in EVA evergreen club but can't provide home tel no so go there.

I've never been to White Rock. Run mainly to USA and if given runs in Canada don't stray very far from highway 1, we're based in Lethbridge but run Calgary-Vancouver, Calgary- Toronto/Montreal etc.

Whereabouts do you live ?
