Not just a flight of fancy

Like most but not all, am obviously aware of the medication issues on travelling through the Emirates, but I constantly wonder was sort of legal representation these jailed guys had ??

I take Tramadol and Codeine and others, strictly on the banned list but am prescribed like many other travellers......Do these people have any legal assistance or in reality do they indeed get banged up with no legal help ??

What is the matter, your resume isn't long enough? :whistling:

I just dont believe for one single minute Jacko that these people are being banged up for four years for having poppy seeds in top pockets, after visiting McDonalds, or having bog standard everyday medication in carry on luggage......Any half decent lawyer would have the prosecution in turmoil and defeat, in 2 minutes flat.

Even in a worst case scenario, your own GP would/could produce verification of medications after 2 or 3 days.

Well having experinece of the Middle East I do know you can get banged up quite easily. Jumping a red light in KSA would get you 30 days in the clink, no questions. Smoking a cigarette in Ramadan was rumoured to get you banged up until month's end. A friend received a summons for parking his car in a restricted place he had been nowhere near. It was only uncovered at the court that the police officer had written the registration number down wrong, my friend had a blue RX7 not a white Mazda. The result being my friend had to pay the fine anyhow as the Egyptian judge could not tell the Omani policeman he screwed up.

Oh I agree Jacko you can get banged up pretty easy, but I've always doubted this 4 year bang up for having prescription medications clearly obtained from the medical profession.

Never assume another country will meet your presumptions of justice.

Surely your beliefs in British jurisprudence are somewhat dulled too?

Indeed thats one way of putting it.....

Must admit I do work on worst case scenario when I've travelled on Etihad out of Abu Dhabi and keep all meds in main checked luggage, but I guess even that wont protect you entirely.

My passport was always held by the company when I worked in Saud Arabia.

Jacko, I have to ask. Why did you give your passport to the company you worked for? That passport is the property of the country that issued it to you, not you, and if the laws are the same in your country are the same as mine, you do not have the authority to use it in.

barter. Also, if you lose control of it, you are required to report it to your government. If someone forces you to turn over your passport that is not authorized to do so by your government, that is theft and you are REQUIRED to report it to your government.

It was obligatory.

I was issued with an ID card, an Iqama.

It may not have been required by Saudi law to hold the passports, but many companies did. I know some of the foreign managers were able to keep theirs, and they had multiple exit/re-entry visas in them so could drive over to Bahrain or into the Emirates..

My passport would not have allowed me to exit the country either, you needed an exit/re-entry visa or exit only. THose visas had to be obtained by the company represenative.

Things in Saudi Arabia didn't work according to HM Governement.
