I received my 1st warning-25%-after 7 years here beacuse I posted,in his opinion,a racist remark.

You seem to be asking me to explain a post that you made. Sorry I can't do that.

If you are looking for a quote of your post, sorry, I didn't save it. I sift through hundreds of posts a week and don't remember them all exactly, nor do I care to.

 

Feel free to contact anyone you choose. If Martin wants to remove the warning he will. I'm just a moderator, he makes the ultimate decisions and I encourage you to contact him if you feel I have treated you unfairly.

 

If you feel I made a mistake, or someone posted under your handle, or you made a comment you regret for whatever reason then we can discuss it. If you simply made a stupid post that deserved a warning, then so be it. The warning is not the end of the world and it will go away.

I would be curious about what one moderator "judged" to be racist.

 

In addition. sailfast could have contacted you and said he believed it to be a racist remark and deleted it but not warned you.

 

Some words in common usage are actually racist in origin for instance. Some people may not even be aware of it when they say it. If you say somebody "jewed" you in a business deal, that is an obvious referance to Jewish people and most of us know that but if you replace "jewed" with "gyped" many would not know that it refers to the Gypsies in the same manner originally.

The original meaning has been lost over time as refers to Gypsies but as refers to Jews.

 

Intent has a lot to do with whether or not someone should get a warning.

 

As an aside, what is with all these moderators and complaints of warnings all of a sudden?

 

Also, in which forum was it?

 

Moderators, the board existed a long time before you. If true, why would you try to be more heavy handed than the original and solo moderator MM? Is it orders from MM or are you just imposing your will? I am curious to know the new guidlines here, posted guidelines were just "guidelines" before and not commandments written in stone. Please elaborate before we all end up with unexpected warnings.

The real issue is not seeming arbitrary. If mods are going to enforce a higher standard of behavior, that standard should be enunciated before warnings are posted. Then, the standard should be consistant.

 

Lately it seems warnings are being given for behavior that, even though posted as a violation, has been accepted as the norm for years.

 

Giving warnings is not the answer. It just pisses people off. Educating people in advance that changes are occuring is what should have happened. Giving someone a warning and then not being able to back it up with precise information is wrong.

Why are they listed as participants? Why are they not listed as moderators? Why was nothing mentioned (that I have seen) that we would be held to a higher standard than before?

 

I think some of the complaints I have read members feel blindsided. The sudden change seems arbitrary and inconsistant to those who got a sudden and unexpected warning. It is not the warning per se but the sudden change in policy.

The obvious problem occurs when a BM has now idea which post has earned him a warning in the first place. How are you meant to curtail repeat behaviour when you don't know what has offended the Mods in the first place.

OK, since this 25% warning is turning into such an issue with members in good standing and LTGTR seems not mind airing PM's, I will explain. Here is the long boring version;

 

LTGTR started a new one liner thread in the politics and religion forum containing the word "nigger".

 

I deleted the post and LTGTR was given a 25% warning. Not a big deal in my world. To those who have never recieved a warning, they come with a message explaining the reason for the warning.

 

LTGTR PMs me twice on June 22nd:

1. "Care to explain my racist remark that I received my 1st warning for after how many years here?"

2. The second PM is a very long rant about Arab women in burkas on a flight trying to touch his child and an air marshal upgrading him to business class.

 

My Reply:

"Now why should I explain your racist remark?" Taken in context, I open my messages and have two, one a long rant about Arabs and the other asking me to explain his remark. Sounds like a wind up to me.

 

LTGTR PM's me twice on June 23rd:

1. First of all,I don't even kow what entry you're referring to and second and most obvious to all but you,you're the moderator who issued the warning! If you can't do your job properly,let me know ad I'll contact Martin on your behalf."

I "believe" I remember the post now.Not word for word,but the crux of it was about using the term"niggered it up",sayig we could no loger use that term because we have a black President,IIRC.I never used the term in a degrading manner-it was just in the context of the joke It was a cut and paste and was humorous.I would NEVER use that term,either spoken or ritten.And surely not off-color-no pun inteded.

And since you refuse to tell the whole story,I will,regarding my 2nd PM.

As a matter of fact,the cut and paste I used was from an e-mail from a BLACK friend of mine.He surely didn't think it was off-COLOR! And once again,after 7 years,my 1st warning of any kind,especially racially oriented.

Since you originally could not remember the offending term and MM came to your rescue by providing the offending term,hopefully you'll extend the courtesy of a PM in the future as,I quote once again,"To those who have never recieved a warning, they come with a message explaining the reason for the warning".

To be clear once more,I don't use that word.I just cut and pasted an e-mail I rec'd from a BLACK friend regarding no longer being able to use the phrase,"niggered something up",and offered replacent phrases,IIRC;obviously in reference to the president of the US.No one was called that word,it wasn't used in a derogitory manner,ect.

I'm still waiting on an admission by sinkfast that he failed to send a PM both prior to and after the warning,thereby failing in his responsibilities as a moderator.

And MM or sinkfast,once again,time to man-up and post that horrible ditty I posted.And MM,I know you have to back your mods right or wrong,but step up here and post it to show how wrong he was.Or take the easy way out.....
