Hi,

I'm new. I figured that I should say hello.

And I have an off topic question. I have some american iron that needs power.

Maybe you are thinking that Tucom should have an inverter downstairs. They do,

but only 12v to 220v. I am looking for 220v to 110v. On the third floor

they have one they call a converter, but it is only good for 60 watts. I need a bit

more power. Anyone ?

The only places i can think of are along Threppasit Rd, if you have a moped, i suggest you start from Sukhomvit rd end and ride along past the market until you come to the Honda garage on your left. At this junction there is a shop called "Thanna home" They have all kinds of wonderful stuff in there, if not then go along further until you are near the View Talay buildings either side of you and there are a few good electrical shops on the right hand side before you get to the lights, good luck

Most tech malls (Tukcom for example) and lots of other malls have kiosks selling small step-downs for about 300 baht, big ones for about 800 and up.

You want a transformer, not an invertor.

An iron doesn't need any 'protection'.

Buy a new iron from BigC...... as you say most units will not be big enough for an iron.

Make sure the wiring where you're staying can handle the extra wattage that inverter is going to pull through that crazy Thai wiring! banghead

He said he is going to run a 110V appliance on a 220V Thai line with a step-down transformer.

Where is the "extra wattage" going to come from?

Appreciate your dilema - my rule -- I do not wear anything that requires ironing. Proper folding is IMHO the way to go. The only thing I will wear that needs ironing is my one suit and one tux, and I hate like heck to have to wear them.

Or buy a proper iron (220V) for 600 baht, anyway.

It *is* a problem for Norte Americanos and Japanese, raised pathetically deprived of real electricity until they become helpless adults, unable to cope (or iron) in a fully charged world, forever identified by their crumpled Arrow shirts.

Good point. Watts=voltsxamps...school science. An appliance draws amps, not watts. It will draw enough amps from the voltage available to create the maximum wattage, so what the OP means is it will be drawing more amps from the system, except it will not because the step-UP transformer will ensure the voltage is right.

Having said all that, ditch 110 V seppo shite FFS and buy local. An iron costs fuck all. Transformers use energy and can catch fire.

I'm not a sparky, where is Jock Bomb when he can be helpful? however I do know a wee bit about electricity.

Transformer losses!!!!

It's going to come from the generator on the end of a turbine, and go up into the air above the transformer!
