All,

This is a general question for all of the expat bar owners out there. I am wondering how they went about owning a bar/club in Thailand. What were the costs? Did you go in as a partner (and if so where did you find a partner)? What are the legalities? How difficult is the process?

I am very interested in getting involved in this business so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Don't....

I know this is not what you asked, but it is the thought that comes to mind.

If you have never run a bar before then Pattaya is not the place to start off.

If you have run a bar before the SAME applies.

Seriously, many people have come to Pattaya with dreams of opening a bar and most have had those dreams shattered. Some have been successful, the majority have probably lost more money than they could afford to.

Hassles from officials, police, staff problems, low season, competition, world economy, etc - who needs it.

Good locations are few and far between and will be expensive, most bars "for sale" are because they are in poor locations.

Some bars do make (a lot) of money, most don't.

Some bars/gogos have silent partners that don't need to participate in the day to day operations, but get dividends monthly or quarterly on their investment.

It can be done, but most publicly sold or marketed shares in bars, or bars for sale, are likely to be losers. I'd guess that insiders, people who have done business here before, are more likely to get the good deals and real opportunities, rather than someone wanting to break into the business from the outside.
