Just how bad are Australia's Footballaroos?

Recommended Posts

Using their starting World Cup 11,they couldn't get by a makeshift US team (squad to UK and it's other former colonies).Sure Harry QL was missing for them, but he usually is beacuse he's always injured.

Being a 3-1 final,it should have been far worse, with US clown Findley missing open goal from 10 yards out and in the following sequence, missing from 6 INCHES,and US best player Clint Dempsey having a goal disallowed for offsides because South African linesman doesn't understand the rule.So 5-1 would have been embarassing indeed.

How do "Roos compensate for lack of talent? Persistant fouling, often nasty and uncalled for-just ask Dempsey who was fouled 10 times-often harshly.

Useless US coach Bradley leaves his best player,Dempsey on for 82 minutes and leaves Donovan on the entire match-with the WC a week away.

So this wasn't the typical WC warmup match we've seen from other teams-luckily nobody was injured.

That's not our starting 11. Brett Emerton was out injured ,and, who knows Harry might get on the park as well.

Tim Cahill was injured, but you're only talking about 1 team, yeah?

Maybe you would like your team to wear padding like your gridiron players. We would'nt want them to scrape their knees or anything.

The fact is that we wont win the Cup.........and neither will you.

So, make like a good Septic and blow it out of your arse.

Have to agree with the OP here... Sure the Aussies won't get past the 1st round, but I am guessing the yanks won't either.

Lets face it Soccer (Football) is a minor sport in both our countries!

Who cares.... move along.

Maybe I was'nt clear enough. I was refering to the commment at the end of your post saying that it was lucky nobody was injured. Cahill was. That's why I made the comment about you only talking about one team.

Guess you must have been napping when Cahill went off.

Emerton plays, USA still wins, I agree, but, maybe a better showing from the Aussies. It sure was'nt pretty.

Anyway, I must have been very hungry to take the bait, I'll have to watch that. :banghead

Now Diga. Repeat after me: I will not get snarky, i will not get snarky, I will not get snarky, I will not get f.....ing snarky.

Just worry about your own group stage my American friend.

Also for your info, not long before the USA/Oz game, the team learned that the son of one of our reserve keepers Brad Jones, has just been diagnosed with Leukemia.

Not the sort of thing to put you on a high when you are about to play a game.

Football is a major sport in the USA and in Australia, with a great following. I am a fanatical Australian Rules supporter and always will be. Australian Rules and American Gridiron are great sports, probably more exciting to watch than "Soccer", if you are a fan. They have never managed to get much of a following outside of their countries. In Australia it is common to get crowds of 90 000 to 100 000 spectators, watching Aussie Rules and sometimes Rugby on a weekly basis, attendances "Soccer" can only dream of. Watch Aussie Rules or Rugby shown on Australian TV in Thailand on weekends in the evening and you might become a convert.

There is no denying it and I am not talking about the run of the mill "Soccer" games they show on TV here. When it comes to events like the World Cup every four years, there is nothing on earth to match it. It is poetry in motion, with the best sportsmen in the world competing, showing immense skills and flair. There has to be a reason this great event has the whole world enthralled.

There is no excuse for people like you and me being in denial. Just sit back in your favourite chair with a few cans and enjoy this magnificent spectacle. It has to be more exciting than the Romans watching their gladiators a long time ago. Not even the modern Olympic Games comes close to it. :banghead

Hi Gonzo

I can't agree that Soccer is a MAJOR sport in Australia, and I asuming in the USA..... not like Baseball & American Football, even Ice Hockey and Basketball. They are surely the major sports. AFL & Rugby dominate in Australia like you say.

I am an AFL follower, grown up with it, follow Hawthorn. Yes I will tune into the world cup, watch/support the Socceroo's..... like any self respecting Aussie will. But I stop short of being "passionate" about soccer, as I suspect many Aussies are due to the way the players carry on after a minor ankle tap. Falling over as if shot, carted off on a stretcher, only to be up and about 5 minutes later and back on the field..... For Fucks Sake!

As far a a magnificent spectacle goes..... on the world stage it has its place and its appeal, but personally I find the Olympic Games better. Each to their own I suppose. As Athletes go, I think AFL players beat them in just about every regard. Sure, soccer players they have great skill (but they are NOT the best sportsmen in the world IMHO)l.... but so do AFL players. Think Chris Judd.... now there is an athlete, who can run, kick with precision, and get bashed about physically week in week out and just get on with it. To me that is the part of the modern AFL player that we Aussie really admire.

Look I hope the Socceroos get past the 1st round, but can't see us beating the Germans, Croatia we are a chance, and Ghana (I think it is) hard to predict anything there.

The initial post was having a dig at the Socceroos as being no good. My point was the BEST Australian footballers (IMHO) don't actually play the round ball game. Its a bit like Rugby in Australia... when the poms rubbish us after beating us in the world cup. Rugby is played (seriously) in only half of Australia.... Vic, SA, TAS & WA are all AFL states. So when the poms beat us at Rugby they are beating half the country, coz the rest of us really couldn't give a XXXX!

I will say that soccer is more interesting than cricket, but not much more interesting. While working in Australia, one of the guys I worked with took me to a cricket match. I was bored to death. The next day he called and asked if I was ready. I had to ask was I ready for what? He told me that we HAD to go watch the finish of the cricket match. I didn't go and he was really pissed off at me. They may not score in a soccer match but at least it is finished in one day.

I think you mean 90,000 to the match of the day in AFL; 90,000 total for the round in NRL. :D

(7,000 to the Parramatta v Storm game, which should have been one the drawcards of the season)

Australian Rules is without a doubt the most entertaining form of football in the world.soccer should be renamed shocker as you can play 90 minutes and noboday can score thats boring not entertainment.
