Rudeness at Tony's Fitness

Recommended Posts

I saw big signs outside Tony's Fitness offering promotion of one-year membership for 5,9999 baht yesterday, so I went it to join as I need to drop some kilos.

Inside there was nobody at the member desk to help. I was told to wait.

After 10 minutes a woman came over and asked what I wanted. I told her I wanted to see the facilities and join for one year.

She did not say one word to me (I can speak Thai fairly well). Not even a hello, nothing!

She just handed me a piece of paper to fill out - no information about the club or anything.

I filled it out and handed it to her. Again she did not say one word to me. She wrote something down in a book and then looked up at me and said, "7,999 baht." That was it, not another word. I told her that I thought there was a promotion. She said, "Are you member now?" I said that I wasn't, and she said, "Then you pay 7,999 baht."

The rudeness and lack of any assistance was enough to make me just walk out.

This is no way to treat potential customers, especially in these economic times.

Unfortunately, California Wow is still double the price so Tony's may get my money after all, but what a lousy way to start.

this is your first run-in with Thai style customer service ?

I thought that was pretty much the way it works most places

Which Tony's was that?

I used the one on Soi 16, and except for a short time when it had a Thai man as manager i was treated very well. A member there for over three years.

The gym at the top of Khaotalo just after the Kaonoi turn is only 5,000 Baht a year and is managed by AK a very nice Thai chap with very good English.

It has all the facilities you need incl Free Yoga Weds and Fri mornings

From the stories I've heard about Tony himself he wont ever get 1 baht from me. So it is no surprise his staff are the same way.

Unfortunately the location is a bit out of the way for me and I don't need any excuses not to go!

I joined California WOW on my last visit. I could not have been more displeased. Treadmills were very slow when working. The gym did not have a fitness pool. Nautilus equipment was outdated. The most entertaining part of my workout was watching a farang woman do some Muay Thai workout in the ring. She looked like the last time she put out her leg out was to trip someone in line at McDonald's. Yet she was kicking wildly as Jackie Chan. Very funny. I will have to bring a few workout items in my luggage next trip as California wow is a huge dud, imo. Maybe wade in the ocean for resistance training? If you folks are looking for a good business, there you have it. Open up a decent gym in Pattaya. You would have no competition. And less tea money visits than a bar owner.

It seems I have two horrible choices - California Wow, where I have to pay 14,900 for a year and hope I can get on aerobic equipment without waiting forever in line (I just want the gym for losing weight and building cardio). or Tonys for 7,999 with totally rude and unhelpful staff along with no access when I am in Bangkok.

What a great choice!

I sent an email yesterday morning - no response. I called the number and that just got me staff and when I asked how I can speak with Tony she said, "He not here," and hung up! I am not grousing, I am sharing experience and hoping for some assistance. That is what forums are all about. By the way, your claim that Tony always gets back with an offer to work things out. May I ask what you base that on. I have not read or heard a single positive comment about the man other than he is wealthy.

call them again...tell the Thai staff you're a relative...eventually you'll get through and you'll probably get a membership for less than 5999....be persistant...

and don't take advice from localyokul... as he doesn't seem to get along with anyone....

did I give any advice ?

I get along with people fine if they treat me the way they'd like to be treated

once they break that then I treat them how they treated me, so WTF is your problem ?

Are you sure that you got your numbers right? I paid 14,000 for a lifetime membership at Calif Wow. Not that I like it, but it was better than Tony's. Not taking into effect that I just don't like a guy that buys a one story building, and then puts up a two story picture of himself (from 20 years ago) on it. Calif wow has Tony's beat on the quality of the changing rooms, the amount of equipment, everything in one building. True, they don't have a pool, or tennis court, both of which I would never use anyway.

I checked out several of Tony's places, and was treated rudely in each of them. In Calif wow, I was given a hard sell, and have to field off those standing outside each time I go in. Neither floats my boat, the only other players in town have very small gym's with out the equipment I want to use. Good luck in your choice of who is the lessor of two evils.

I suppose it is possible if I went back to California Wow three or four times the offer would keep changing, but I am thinking about going into the Bangkok club and seeing if I can get the 9,000 baht membership that some people have told me about.

I did receive an email from Tony. It was not what I had hoped for, but in fairness I do want to acknowledge that he replied.

There was no offer of the 5,900 promotion so I will keep trying at California Wow to see if I can get the 9,000 lifetime many people have told me they have.

How about it's virtually next door to Kik Bar a wicked little place with loads of girls.

Now there's an excuse for a beer and a grope after training.

Why beg him to contact him? He's obviously so wealthy he doesn't need your business.
