cheap handy gadget for viewing video files/photos

I just bought one these to watch avi files I had downloaded but couldn't burn to disk. You can use a memory stick or card and view the stuff on TV. It was only about £25 and comes with a remote control. I bought a 16g stick to go with it. One of the reviews said it wiped their portable HD, so don't risk connecting an external HD to it with stuff you haven't backed up.

I've been interested in one of these gadgets http://www.snatech.com/index.php?tpid=0136&pgid=index

Use Google Translate to get the drift of what it does.

They are selling for 7000b around Thailand.

You can hook it up to your TV as an output, input from a Satellite or Cable Box (UBC) for recording/viewing, supports network sharing for files on your home network, can be configured with a USB or ESATA hard drive.

Apart from the dedicated ones like Tivo and TrueVisions, I've never heard good things about these boxes. I notice the demo screen shot there is just movies from BitTorrent or whatever, too. Be careful. Getting them onto the drive is usually the tricky part. If you have to be there to do it, or go through some laborious copying operation, it's very iffy technology.

I have a plain old VHS recorder hooked up to TrueVisions -- and some 3-hour tapes. It is NOTHING like Tivo-type convenience but I record shows I want to time-shift. That and Torrents keep me going.

Well, I use torrents to download movies to a USB 500G drive. I could just (a) use a networked drive on that box instead or (:whistling: unplug my torrent drive and move it to the box for viewing or © network copy my torrent downloads to an attached usb drive on the box.

I think I like ©, since having a drive on the box allows time shifting/recording from UBC.

You really use VHS tapes?

I had no idea you could still buy such things.

They're not exactly at the front of the store, but there's still a good supply on the market in general. Heck, audio tape casettes are still pretty easy to get.

I have an old PC connected to our TV in the lounge and a Wireless connection to both of our PC's/Internet for viewing downloaded/streaming TV/Movies or Photos or web surfing.

Windows Homegroup on Windows 7 works flawlessly.

We have an HDMI cable and watch full HD movies/Sport I think when the year is up True will be cancelled as I can find much better quality on the net than True can be bothered to muster.
