I am from the USA and currently living in Washington State. Actually Jamie, England did play a small part in the Vietnam War and had 22 British soldiers lose their lives.

To put it another way- Left to the Americans, this thread would be pretty quiet.

 

Once an American has voted - his job is done.

It is those who feel they are not able to register their homeland, due to lumping together, that are qualifying their vote by stating their country with a post.

 

That is why there are so few American posts on this thread- but you knew that didn't you ?

Incorrect. No British units were sent to Vietnam in a combat role. There was the normal mishmash of Int/Sigs/Provo at the Embassy in Saigon in a non-combatant role, but that was it. However, there were several Brits serving with both the AUS and NZ forces in-theatre, including several on exchange programmes between the SF units. There certainly weren't 22 British military killed in Vietnam. Apart from anything else, the British military was pretty stretched in the 60s just dismantling the remnants of the Empire.

Actually, we fought you guys twice and won. Okay, we had a bit of help from the French at the end of the first match.

 

But the point of the poll was not to win or lose, it was merely to put paid to the incorrect claims that this is a predominantly American board.

 

The poll and other sources of information disprove that claim, which is usually put forth by those that have a national whinging trait in their gene pool.

During the period of US involvement, Britain provided some support. They built the American Air bases in Thailand. Special Forces were also involved on active service. The most highly decorated "American" in the Vietnam War was British. Units were sent from Britain to Fort Dix. At Fort Dix they "resigned from the British Army and re-enlisted in the US Army". After completing their tour in Vietnam, the returning "GI's" were discharged from US Forces and re-enlisted in the British Army on their return to the UK. This allowed Harold Wilson, (the British Prime Minister), to stand up in Parliament and announce "No British Troops are in Vietnam". Twenty two British Servicemen were killed in action in Vietnam. Britain did not help the Americans as such because the British public were against it, this was undoubtedly the worst Anglo-American friendship that any British Prime minister and American President has ever had.

In the book The Green Berets by Robin Moore, the "Sven Kornie" main character in the first chapter was based on Larry Thorne. The book was later made into a movie by the same name starring John Wayne.

Australia had thousands of troops in Vietnam. Lots of infantry and Air Force. New Zealand had less then 700 soldiers. If I remember correctly a artillery battery. South Korea had 50,000 soldiers. PI had around 2 thousand and Thailand was at the 1,000 level. I want to thank all the men and women from the allied countries that supported us in Vietnam.
