Met quite a few Aussies, many more Brits though.

Haven't noticed any terrorist attacks in Thailand killing multiple Aussies.

Blaming Bali for terrorist attacks would be like blaming Queensland for floods -- or New York for terrorist attacks that killed multiple Aussies.

When you find your comfort zone in a foreign country. It's easy to do the same thing over and over. Especially if your having fun with little hassle. I come back to Pattaya frequently and do the same

Funny you should ask that question? I've been to the following:   Australia New Zealand China Singapore Malaysia Indonesia Japan Taiwan Vietnam Cambodia India South Africa Egypt Israe

Vietnam. Without a doubt French/Vietnamese mix. Absolutely gorgeous.

Most terrorist attacks in Indonesia are aimed at the local people. And carried out by the military.

Make no mistake LDK.....the Bali bombings in known Aussie niteclubs (Sari Club) were aimed at killing as many Aussies as possible......

No other reason.

Seen a couple on the news in Bali over the years. They exacute drug smugglers but go easy on terrorists. Fuck Bali, I don't care how cheap it is or how nice the people are. The country fucking sucks.

Not if you ever had the privilege to catch some of those left-handers at Uluwatu, which are awesome. The touts and batik sellers on Kuta or Legian Beach can be a nuisance for the newbie one-week tourist, but will leave you alone, once they get to know you. There is good sex to be had as well. Good-looking guys like Big D can score sheilas for free. The Bintang beer is not a bad drop either.

Nonetheless the Bali bombers got far more publicity (what they wanted out of it, I guess) than the Indonesian military did in all its terror campaigns in West Papua, East Timor (now independent), Aceh...

Makes you wonder about our navel-gazing media, doesn't it?

...or maybe it doesn't. :D

That is not even CLOSE to "most" of the terrorist attacks. Most of the real, actual terrorist attacks have been in the Moluccas, Kalimantan and the two "important" islands, Java and Sumatra, including several in Jakarta. And most of them were by JI, Jemaah Islamiyah, which has more grievances than Heinz has varieties. Weirdly (or not! depending on your stomach for conspiracy) JI is/was on the side of the military in Timor and West Papua -- even Aceh.

I wouldn't for a millisecond trivialise the Sukarno/Suharto military operations, but I think it's useful to separate their suppression from actual, "random" terrorism. The military had predictable, sustained (and often terribly brutal) POLICIES, but for the terrorist attacks "random" is a good word.

It sounds like we have pretty similar perspectives on the history itself. The only difference is the matter of how words are used, or I miss my guess.

In the media, terrorists are generally small-scale, "retail" troublemakers who kill civilians for political purposes. I prefer to ignore scale and simply call terrorism any act of political violence against a civilian population. (Though the bombing of the USS Cole is routinely called terrorism, even though the ship was clearly a military target!)

On my definition the Bali bombings were terrorism, the massacre of a quarter of the majority Catholic population of East Timor another, much bigger act of terrorism.

Looking at the results so far in MM's recent poll 'Where do you come from'....I am amazed that there are not more Australians in Pattaya.....or Thailand in general.

The main reason for me saying this is because we are closer to Thailand than Britain or America....yet Brits and Americans dominate Pattaya in terms of numbers.

It is only a 9 hour flight from Brisbane to Bangkok.......I am unsure of the exact time it takes for Americans and Brits.....but I am fairly sure it is a longer journey?

I realise the poll is only a small reflection of the overall numbers......but Americans and Brits have double the numbers compared to Aussies. :P

Why do you think this is the case....or do you disagree with the poll results being an accurate overall picture?

Cheers.

Wasn't always that way Rick.

Some 20 odd years back when I had the dreadlocks :thumbup Brits were rather rare, now every punter you meet is a Pommie and worst still, they all love cricket! :hairout :thumbup

I agree about the Cole (and Fort Hood). I disagree about Timor. As I said, Timor was a policy. I've never been comfortable with "state terrorism" but if it exists it has to be random. I think there's a hair's difference between cowing a population and terrorising it -- but I think it's a useful difference. "Legal terrorism" and "non-state terrorism" maybe. Defining terrorism isn't simple, but that's not to say that one man's terror is another man's fight for freedom either. Pol Pot wasn't a terrorist, he was a national leader, that's my take. Or Stalin, Mao or the lot of them.

Aussies go to Bali - because of the shit load of advertising pushing the cheap flights. Though there is going to be a temporary fall-off now with the volcanoes kicking up a stink again.

Another thing about Aussies is that once they go for a holiday overseas (or anywhere for that) and they like it and they see a few other Aussies there, then they will go there year-in, year-out until either they die, get killed or somebody suggests a better place.

IT'S AS SIMPLE AS THAT.

A few years ago when JetStar kicked off some of the regular Bali trippers thought . . 'oh, let's try this new place, sounds & looks like Bali' So off they go to Phuket, then in 2004 the Tsunami hit & that scared a lot of them off for a few years.

Then you had that idiot Aussie sheila with the stolen bar towels episode and all the guff that went on with that. That put a few thousand off coming to Thailand. Mind you, I reckon she was such a dummy. She had probably done the same thing in Bali & got away with. Tried the same trick in Phuket and got a very different reaction!

Actually I hope even fewer Aussies come to Pattaya. More pussy for me. You won't hear me winging about not enough Aussies in town. Never.

My mate (Oz) just said the flights to Bali are so much cheaper, Air Asia and Virgin Blue etc. As you say they like to be amongst their own, and all appear to wear Bintang shirts.
