I will be coming to Pattaya in March and I need to have surgical procedure done on me (not serious). Can anybody recommend a hospital or a doctor in Pattaya that provides good medical care (ie Western standards)? What hospital would you avoid?

I have had to go to the Pattaya International Hospital twice over the past 9 years. Nothing serious on either occasion and no surgery required. It was by far the cleanest, most professional hospital I have seen in Thailand with the exception of Bumrungrad in Bangkok.

It sure beat many hospitals in Canada as well. They are very helpful in providing all the proper forms if you have a medical insurance policy and want to make later claims against the policy.

The other one I have heard mentioned is the Bangkok-Pattaya hospital. Some claim it is somewhat less expensive than Pattaya International with the same excellent quality service.

turk56, I am looking for a surgeon to repair a hernia. The doctor I talked to at home says these things are done routinely anymore and that I should be up and about in two days (after the procedure).

Then it should be no problem getting that type of operation. Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital should do that. Make sure you have the insurance and the cash to do that,.

Just something to think about.

ANY surgical procedure has risks.

Do you want to risk that, in a foreign country where the use of English is, at best very limited ?

If things go wrong you are going to be a long way from home.

Saying that, The quality of Hospitals in Thailand is OK, however when I was in Bumrungrad last year the attitude of the nurses was, to say the least very 'distant' and not friendly at all.

If I were to choose somewhere to have an operation I would choose my home country.

A Thai GF of mine was in the Bangkok-Pattaya hospital on Sukhumvit Road and the quality of care was excellent although a little expensive.

It reminded me of BUPA hospitals in the UK.

But,I agree with the comment that i'd much rather have surgery in my own country....however,if theres no alternative this is an excellent hospital but make sure you are either insured or have the means to pay.

I may be wrong but doesn't health insurance exclude pre-existing conditions?

I can understand someone going to Thailand, finding an excellent hospital to have a procedure done if, as in the  UK, there is a long waiting list and private treatment is too expensive.

If the cost in Thailand is reasonable then why not have the hernia dealt with?

Good luck!

I also would choose to have the surgery done at home if only because when I'm in Thailand I don't want to have any downtime recovering from surgery.  However in my case I have a health plan and I wouldn't have any out of pocket expenses.  If I didn't have health insurance or had one that only paid a small percentage of the cost then I would consider Thailand because I've heard stories that US costs are in the thousands and the savings could pay for the trip to LOS.

Big AL I was in Pattaya last June and I had a procedure done at the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital. I had a fatty tumor on my arm and needed it removed before it got any larger. I am self-employed and don't have insurance. The best price I could find here in Florida was $11,000 for a 30 minute procedure. My bill in Pattaya came to a whopping $150 which included the surgery, the meds, and the follow-up visits. The doctor did a great job and you can't even tell I had my arm cut open. And my 3 week vacation in Pattaya went on without a hitch. If it is minor surgery like mine was, I think you will be fine.

I was in the Pattaya International Hospital recently having some Xrays done. The radiologist, obviously gay, asked me to remove my shorts, as the Xrays could not be done with them on. Down to my underwear, he touched my penis and exclaimed "big".

Grrrrrr... I was angry. He then asked me to remove my underwear. I asked him if he was going to provide a gown. Only then did he scuttle off to get me one. I was not a happy bunny.

Overall, not the most in-depth treatment, though as long as you emphasise what you want/need done there is no problem.

Valxxx,

That's the problem in hospitals.  It's almost impossible to tell the difference between a cook and a ........ err gay radiologist. ;)

Mind you, they can both be relied on to do a good mince!

Have had excellant care at the Pattaya International Hospital on Soi 4.  First time was in '95 when I had a motorbike accident.  Had many stitches in the head (which may explain a few things) and stitches in an elbow.  Cleanest hospital I ever saw, and the care was outstanding.  Have been back a few times for flu, intestinal stuff, and a dermatological exam.  Very inexpensive and effective.

Took my tirac to the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital (her request) several times for a lung problem.  Also very clean and efficient.

Both hospitals do not keep you waiting long when you don't have an appointment.         Roy
