Remembrance Service 11/11/11

Whilst the Remembrance Sunday service at the British Embassy is cancelled (If possible they may still hold a small service)the Royal British Legion Thailand Service of Remembrance will still be held at St Nikolaus Church Sukhumvit Road on Friday 11 November, service starts at 10:50am please be seated by 10:40am.

Light refreshments will be available after the service (Sponsored by the British Embassy!!)and no doubt heavier refreshments in a few bars around town after that.

Poppy Boxes are out and about the bars.

I guess you are Tropical Bert.

Your late friend Kevin (and mine) used to bring a collection box and some poppies to the Expats Club, but no one has taken up the mantle since.

I went along this morning, as part of a Royal British Legion presence to the funeral of a ninety two year old member. He was part of The Royal Leicestershire Regiment during the war, and was captured by the Japanese during the fall of Singapore.

He was one of the many that were forced to work on the construction of the notorious Burma -Thai railway and one of the relatively few who survived to tell the story.

One of his old pals was in attendance at the funeral which was a simple graveside ceremony. He turned out to be ninety seven years old, captured at the same time as his chum and also forced to work on that same Railway of Death. It was an honour and a privelige to have his company for the short time I was able to speak to him, a living, breathing part of our history. He didn't look a year older than eighty by the way, a great lad !

Interesting, Singapore was a British colony from 1826 then got occupied by the Japanese in WWII, then back to the Britch rule, and finally got independence in 1963. Lots to remember for them.

As a US Army Vet I (we-the US) also observe 11/11, Armistice Day and I will be in patt's for for it.

Thank you to all that have served and all those who have supported those who have served, but especially to those who made the ultimate sacrifice so I can enjoy my freedom and choice of life style.

I have two young lads from "The Highlanders" (4 Royal Scottish Regiment)staying with me at the moment, they are on leave after completing their 6 month tour of Afghanistan. They are both pipers and will be playing at the service, they are also having a great time playing in Pattaya without the pipes!!!
