do you have to live in thailand to get a driving license ??

as i come over a couple of times a year and just wondered if i could get one

A you can see above in MMs post, a Non-Imm visa is required... and a letter from Immigration confirming residency. That letter requires you to show house book/condo or rental agreement. If your visits are only short you don't need to get one.

What is a non-imm visa? I'm normally in Thailand for 4 weeks then out working 4 weeks, so I just come in on the 30 day entry stamps. I rent a condo full time and was able to get the 1 year licences. If needed what is the shortest/cheapest non-imm visa to get?

A non-Imm visa is a visa you obtain outside of Thailand. If you managed to get a 1 year licence previously without one... well who knows, TIT.

Here information on Visas. Download the .doc File.

Here information about obtaining a driving licence.

Thanks mick and Martin, good news no colourblind or reaction test,as it will be quicker for the renewal process.

Went in today, and the only thing I didn't have was the front/back copy of each driving license. Across the street to make one, and that, plus items above were all needed, with the exception of the Fit To Drive doctor's certificate.

This was for a 5 year renewal.

By the way, I got there about 1:30 (must be there before 2pm they said), and was out by about 3:30pm. We had to watch a 1 hour video in Thai with English subtitles that tried to explain why driving like a typical Thai driver was dangerous :P

1 HOUR??? Surely that would take all day lol lol.I heard one has to sit thru that shit for an hour,to get the 5 year renewal.

There is a reaction test (hold accelerator, hit brake before green light bar reaches red zone), and a test to determine if you can tell the difference between traffic light colors. There wasn't the specific color blind test that has you read the number in a field like this:

They started the movie before I entered the room (5 yr renewals only, I believe), and stopped it before it finished. I was told it runs for an hour, but I was only watching it for about 30 minutes...actually, I was getting into it, and was a little startled when they made us abandon the movie :P

Somebody told me I had 2 weeks after the expiration to renew. I don't know if that's true or not, but I made an effort to get it done before the 2 weeks was up. If I'd known about your situation, I'd have asked at their very helpful license renewal information counter downstairs. I wonder if you can renew the week before your expiration instead.

I renewed mine 10 days after the expiration date without any questions or comments, so part of that statement is false.
