I wouldn't stop there if I were you, small rooms, poor security, tiny beds and a joiners fee of 600 Bht. There is also a multitude of beer Bars around the place and creating a lot of noise, transport is a huge problem with nothing near by. Air con is also a serious problem as they seem to never work.

Are we talking about the Sandy Springs on soi 13? I stayed there in January and thought the place was fine.

I had a deluxe room that faced the water and paid 1500.  A standard room was the same size and did not face the water and was 1000 tbh.  That said, I had several tg come to the hotel and not once was there any mention of a joiner fee.

In addition, my bed was just fine and I am pretty good sized.(Soi 7 says I am fat.  I told him he was ugly-I can lose weight) ;D

There are lock boxes in the lobby, the rooms were clean, the staff were always very pleasant and the pool was good sized and very nice.

I have re-booked for my next trip and would recommend this place.  Jimmy

ThomasDK,

I will be staying at the Sandy Spring in April. In December I went by and had a look at the different rooms available. All the room are nice. I booked the suite only because of the excellant seaview as they are on the 7th and 8th floor. I'm also staying there in April is because of Songkran, and I will be away form all the water that I had last year when staying on Soi 8.

It is a newer hotel and moderen compared to others. The main reason I'm staying their in April is because there are no beer bars in the area. The hotel is located on Soi 13 between Beach Rd and 2nd Rd, so all you have to do is walk a few meters for baht bus transportatin.

I had a friend stay there in January and I have one there now, that I booked his room for in December. There is no joiner fee and the hotel is guess friendy. Like I said the place is newer and there isn't any A/C problems in the rooms. All the rooms I saw, had king size or double beds. There is construction going on next to the Dynasty, but there is a condo between the Sandy Spring and the construction, and both my friends have stated the hotel is very quiet. Check back with me after Songkran and I will give you a first hand report.

Hope this helps,

LeoTex

I think you're getting confused Big Fella, that is not the Sandy you're describing

I stayed at Sandy Springs last November. Had a suite at 2500/night. Found it to be excellent due to the newness of the facility, size of room (suite is actually 2 rooms converted to one large living room and one large bedroom), two full baths, two new flat screen TVs, and king bed. Heard no street/bar noise. The only down side for me was the dinky 3rd floor pool and no in-room safe. Security box at the lobby appeared to be available 24/7, so the lack of in-room safe was not a problem. Will definitely stay again, but trying RG for the first time the last half of March.

Jimmy,

You said that you payed 1500 for a deluxe room. This may have been because it was early Jan and they had jacked up prices over that period but that is the normal rack rate. With a "membership" (available on arrival at reception) which costs 350baht a year, the rate drops to 1200 a night for a deluxe and 990 a night (from 1200) for a standard. You could be aware of this and if so apologies for trying to teach my grandma to suck eggs but the 1500 seemed high.

To all,

Similar to my earlier remarks (not entirely serious either) that I was going to stop recommending this hotel because it was becoming too popular, an example being that they have "re-allocated" all standard rooms with a sea-view to become deluxe rooms, I think you will find that Bigmike's remarks were made with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek.  ;)  ;)

Brother Pie,  I guess I missed the point of Big Mike's levity-joke is on me.  Funny thing, Bacon and I were there in the middle of january and we did inquire as to the membership you mention in your post, but the staff just did not have a clue as to what we were referring , so we let it go and paid the price of our rooms.

Bacon's room was identical to mine in size except for my sea-view which cost me 500 hundred per.  I really liked my view so I stayed there as I love to sit on the balcony at night with my tg de-jour and chill out.  Regards, Jimmy

Jimmy,

They were probably just being bone idle as it requires them to fill in forms and collect money. Nothing new there then.  :)  Either that or you were just unlucky with the reception staff on duty when you arrived.

For your next stay, I would recommend booking via e-mail and mention in your e-mail that you will be taking out a membership on arrival. Nuansri Phanichphakdee is pretty efficient and unless away for a few days as happened to me once so e-mails went unanswered for almost a week, then you will get a quick response. That way you will be on file as paying the lower rate. Ironically if you don't bother to actually take out said membership my money is on you paying the lower rate anyway - such is typical Thai hotel admin. Print out their e-mail response to you and you have a watertight case.

Worth a few Yodsak afternoons during a 2 week stay.   ;D ;D

Cheers

Pie

I guess I missed Big Mike's humour too.

To answer the original question, the suites at the sandy Spring are great.  Two rooms, two flat screen TVs, a big bathroom with separate shower and tub, a big balcony with furniture overlooking Pattaya bay.  The air conditioner is fine but in December with the temperature and humidity reasonable I slept with the air off and balcony doors wide open.  Very comfortable and minimal noise.

Whether the extra cost is worth it is a personal judgement on the value of the extra space and a little more comfort and good location.  I thought it was for a 5 night stay but I don't think I'd spend it on two week or longer stay.

Absolutely no problem with guests.

I'm staying there when I go back which unfortunately may not be until November.

If Big Mike was trying to put a guy off a place then that is mean spirited and belongs on another board maybe ? I thought we are all here to help each other and pass on our knowledge for the benefit of others.

Now now Pieman please don't give away all the secrets.

I think that I'm much the same boat as you as far as recomending the Sandy Springs . I guess a person should learn to keep there fingers off the key board in this section.

LOL,

ThomasDK,

I am staying at the Sandy Spring at the moment.

I booked a Standard room at 990 baht per night from the Scandibar.com website  (www.scandibar.com). I was really interested in the Deluxe room but it was not being offered through Scandibar.com.

One week before my arrival I emailed Sandy Spring direct to confirm they were holding my booking. They replied that they were and would I instead be interested in a Deluxe room with Seaview at 1,190 baht per evening. No mention of any membership. I replied that I would like like to have the Deluxe room with seaview and requested a room as high up as possible.

I was fortunate to have been given a room on the 8th floor (the 9th floor is the roof). I think there may only be one other Deluxe room with seaview on this floor as the rooms next to me are the Suites. The view is great.

I asked at Reception and they told me that the Standard room is the same as the Deluxe room with the difference being the seaview. The Deluxe rooms start from the 4th floor, but I would definately want to be at least on the 6th floor. A greater part of the view on the 4th and 5th floors are blocked by the buildings to the immediate right. Also, you have a little less privacy as part of the inside of the rooms can be seen from the pool area on the 3rd floor. I have no idea what the deal is with the rooms facing the Soi.

If you asked me whether the 200 baht extra is worth it for the seaview room I would definately say yes (but do try to get a room at least on the 6th floor), and would I stay here again, again yes !

Gordon.

You have let the cat out of the bag now.

I plead totally guilty Bigmike !  :-X  I just can't bring myself to tell a lie, I have a reputation to uphold !  :-/

Let me try and make some amends by mentioning some negatives -

* the key to the room needs to be placed in a key holder in order to activate the air-con, lights and TV. This means that once you leave the room and remove the key, the room will be hot upon your return.

* The quality of the TV reception is rather poor.

* I have ants in the room which love my computer and any food left lying around (even if carefully wrapped).

There, that will keep the hordes away !  ;D

Gordon.  ::)

I stopped there twice last year July and August (I had to return to Sydney for 2 weeks) I had no trouble with ants. That's all that I'm going to say about the place.

I think the membership scheme may have been dropped.

I was charged the 1200 Baht for a deluxe room in February (No reduction for a month stay tho' >;) ) No mention of 350 Baht membership. I booked thru their own website.

Mind the tone of the place was lowering, with the arrival of f'ing boorish loud-mouthed golfers en-masse, just prior to my departure.

Mate the saving of 510 baht on a suite is a pretty good saving, well worth going for because they are very good suites with top views.

Mike,

Thanks, I just emailed them again and asked for a suite on the 7th floor if the 'membership' price wasn't honored on the 8th floor. I agree about the rooms as I looked at a few when I went by in December to make my reservation and pay a deposit for April. Both the 7th and 8th floors have a great view of the bay.

Thanks again,

LeoTex

Anyone have an opinion whether the Sandy Springs is better than Residence Garden?

I know SS is in a better position for the action, but which one has the better rooms?

TIA
