Motor bike insurance in Pattaya

Recommended Posts

I'm coming out to Pattaya next week (Yahoooo!!!) and intend renting a bike again. However I've noticed that the bike insurance from the hirer states "Our bikes are only covered by the third party government insurance which you need to tax the bike."

I contacted AA Insurance in Patts to see if they can offer cover, who replied "Thank you for your inquiry but I am sorry, insuring a rented bike for 3 weeks is not possible".

Any idea who rents with proper insurance or where I may be able to get stand alone insurance? The company who I rented from before, who were very good I might add, unfortunately doesn't give that extra cover and therefore I would be liable for any damage or loss to the bike.

Hopefully this will also be useful to anyone else who is renting a bike for their jollies to check what cover they have - no good finding out after the event!!

Many thanks guys

Before you even ask this question you have answer this one, does yor travel insurance exclude motor cycles in any form from your cover? If it does than re-think every thing.

If he can get short-term 1st-Class insurance (or even 2nd Class (3rd Party Fire and Theft)) (it's certainly available at BXPs) he will be covered except for repatriation.

Of course, an amulet, a couple of pieces of mangy string wrapped around your wrist or a dodgy tattoo works just as well - or so I'm told.

Who the fuck needs insurance with that seeing that the Catholics have cancelled St Christophers accreditation?

Err, Poolhustler is who I rent from, so the first statement is from him!

My travel insurance covers me up to 125cc bikes for medical and personal liability, hence I don't go for the huge bikes like the 150cc's

CT, where can I get that cover from and can I get it for a bike I'm renting rather than owning?

Thanks guys

Most health insurance policies will not cover you if you are in a motorcycle accident. The very best policies cover you up to 100,000 baht. That is peanuts in case of a serious accident. I know that young bullet proof guys don't worry about getting badly hurt but it DOES happen. Think about that before renting a motor bike.

ADDED - Paying damage for a rented motorbike should be the least of your worries.

BXPs = Border Crossing Points. I don't know the locations of providers in Pattaya - it must be available because I am given the option of 1st Class Insurance when I rent down here.

I'll have an ask around next week though and see if I can get a contact number/e-mail/website ...

I think you missed the part about my travel insurance DOES cover me for medical cover.

i know I'm not bullet proof, but I am an experienced biker who rides thousands of miles a year on a much bigger bike than a 125. I'm also experienced in riding in Patts as well. I've already ran a thread about biking in Patts - this one is purely about the insurance, but thanks for your contribution.

CT, thanks for your help and I'd appreciate it if you come up with the details of how to get it.

Mai-Pang used to offer some supplementary cover.

Beware their website though .... it is giving me a warning on my site advisor.

Even if you can buy insurance for a rental, what's the chance of a tourist getting a payout? An expat sure, but even at home these things take more time than you'll have here. The bike owner will want paid immediately, and once you've left the country it would be hard to reclaim that from the insurance company.

I went into the office at Mai-Pang and the wall had several letters posted praising the insurance. The English was pretty good so I think they were genuine. If the bike owner who rents out, also supplied the insurance, surely it is a matter of not having to shell out for the bike you damaged. Your liability could just be the deposit. Hospital bills might of course be a whole other matter.

add to that the deductible and the premiums and it makes getting extra insurance on a twist and go kinda pointless imo.
