Cheap bicycle needed

I am arriving end of May and may be looking for a cheap bicycle.

It needs to be a mountain or hybrid bike with a large frame size. Not a road bike. Infrequent riders may be confused by the term "road bike" - it refers to bikes with narrow tires and drop-down handlebars,

And it should be in working order.

I am looking for a cheap bike because it may end up being a throwaway - at the end of a couple of months I will get rid of it.

Try Big C extra (or any of their other branches)... they have bikes and are pretty reasonably priced..

Apart from the fact they are of pretty crap quality they don't do too many large frames. I'd be inclined to buy a half-decent bike and sell it on at the end of my stay.

Not sure about Pattaya but last trip (Feb this year) I bought myself a decent mountain bike (21 speed, disc brakes, front shockies) large solid frame (I'm 195 cm tall) for 6,300 bahts from a small Thai bike shop in Chaiyaphum. I could have bought a dual shock one for about the same price but he advised I would be a bit heavy for the dual shock.

 

Yes I know it is not Pattaya but I'm sure there are Thai bike shops in Pattaya as well and I was just trying to indicate the price of a decent mountain bike to the OP. In comparision at home in Oz I ride a Giant Boulder mountain bike and the one I bought in Thailand is about on a par with the Giant.

Yes, I agree. A few years ago, I bought one of Big C's top-of-the line bikes. It lasted less than a month before parts wore out and was never a 'good' ride. If I only used it occasionally, maybe it would have been sufficient.

 

I'd recommend buying a good used one from a real bicycle shop. There are a few shops on Thep Prasit Road in Jomtien (between Sukhumvit and Thap Phraya). Some of these shops will also buy or resell the bike for you when you are ready to leave. If you buy from them, they will also provide full-service maintenance for the life of bike. I paid about the same as what I paid for the new bike at Big C, but after 3-4 years of regular use, these quality bikes are still operational.

The problem is that it is quite probable I will simply ditch the bicycle after a couple of months and I dont think paying 6000 baht makes economic sense. Well, maybe for some, not for me. Selling in a few days' does not appear likely either.

It is not meant for serious riding - just for getting to short distances. It achieves two objectives - gets me from A to B more safely than on a motorbike, and keeps bicycling body parts somewhat in use. I have more than 200,000 km on big bikes, but prefer to stay away from them in Pattaya.

What do these Big C bicycles cost?

As cheap as 1650 baht and upwards. But those are quite poorly made and quite heavy. More the sort of thing you send the TGF to the 7-11 on when she is gaining weight.

But - I don't know what mental image you have of me. The reality is closer to your description - someone who should be riding to the 7-11 far more often on a cheap bicycle!

Well you sure will look sweet pedalling with your little basket up-front.

There is a moderate selection at the BigC and prices cover quite a range......

There are similar bikes in Tesco too.

But it won't need to be a throwaway.... perhaps a giveaway.....
