Took 600 cigs back with me last month - only had hand luggage - 200 in duty free plastic bag on show and 400 in hand luggage -- waved through without a blink

I told the immigration officer who checks passports, I had three bottles of whiskey with me. He directed me to a conveniently located window where I paid the duty. I don't know if there's a limit on the number of bottles you can bring in. I on a cruise right now and will check when I return to Miami in two weeks. I'll get back to you.

"Thanks BigD for the information. I look forward to more when you have time."

According to a uniformed Custom' Agent today at the Port of Miami. You can bring in a reasonable amount of duty free liqueur into the US as long as it's for personal use. He didn't know what was considered a reasonable number. Tax is minimal and is on a sliding scale based upon alcohol proof. Just declare the number of bottles on the customs form given to you on the plane. FWIW you can only bring in one carton of ciggs.

I heard something interesting yesterday. Apparently when they built T5 at HTR, they installed a number of belt scanner X Ray machines to observe luggage content.

That is from someone who works in the Airport, so probably more risk if coming into Terminal 5 (British Airways/Qantas)

I am guessing, but I hope Cigarettes aren't really what they are looking for there!

No, but as well as explosives, guns, drugs etc, if they need a tug, they can always used the technology. He reckons a lot more people are being stopped at T5 custom exit, and cigs confiscated. They just make stopping people more efficient if they see something that looks like contraband and yet another annoying thing since airports have tightened up security due to terrorism. Although this is luggage coming in and not boarding a plane. They are not on all the belts though apparently, so its pot luck. Talking of luck, I will be using Terminal 5 to fly BKK and back. I will still chance a few boxes of Golden Virginia. If they confiscate 2 boxes it has only set me back £30

Not T5 (I HATE LHR), but I was bringing 2 boxes of Golden Virginia back into the UK for years and years without issue.

Me too. I guess its just the luck of the draw and the time of arrival The BA flights now arrive late afternoon at LHR when there are a lot more staff on duty.

In Australia you can only bring back 50 cigarettes. I'm not a smoker but my brother is so I thought I might bring back a carton and I got a shock when I found out that I was way over the limit. I opened the carton and had individual packets in every pocket of my shorts and shirt. Shouldn't have worried because I just walked straight through customs.

My worst issue was when I bought back three boxes of Kamagra. I ticked the declaration card that I was bringing back drugs and the customs guy gave me a quick look over until I started listing all my prescription medication. He just smiled and waved me through.

I carried 8 loose packs and a carton of cigarettes through US customs. I WAS checked. The guy who was inspecting my luggage smiled and said that he was NOT looking for cigarettes.
