how to invoice my consultation service

Recommended Posts

Hi , finally , after 10 years i m ending my cooperation days. I decided to work as consultant and allready agreed with a company in bkk. I will work only 4 days per week and meanwhile i will continue consulting other companies on my free times. One of those companies wanted me give invoice( sth that they can use to deduct their tax). I asked some friends and they said i can prepare a simple invoice even by myself. Is that right? Cause in my hometown i can prepare invoice only if i have a company. Any advice?

The Company wanting an invoice for tax purposes needs a "tax invoice" if you do not know what this is you would be better placed to invest some money talking to an accountant. The revenue dept have been hard on this recently, so businesses will want to keep things clean.

Just a point, you will find your work permit is relatively restrictive as to where you can work legally and with whom. They do not allow freelancing to other firms, it is typically at a specified location with a specific firm. Again time spent with a professional is time and money well spent to cover these topics. Finding a good consultant is a different can of worms.

If you go down the company road, they are easy to set up but painful and relatively expensive to close. This I learned the hard way.

Thank you very much for info. It looks like i can not give them invoice. So its better for me just to keep on working with the company i allready agreed in bkk. But, what i can offer to the second conpany is ( if they want consultation a few hours per week) : dont give me salary, just pay my place tickets or restaurant expences.. that was they can show it as expence ;)

If they are offering services or goods in return, then perhaps you can negotiate something more useful such "sundries" whereby they can pay cash out for everyday stuff and write it off, or maybe put your apartment down as an office and they pay the rent and cover it that way.

Coincidentally I've just this minute finished changing our company invoices (plenty of free templates if you google), if you need to you can download a template and change it for your own preferences in Excel or Word.

Are you not violating the terms of your work permit?

I also wonder about the legality of issuing invoices that you have created yourself.

I think you should be checking things with a lawyer.

Remember you're a foreigner in a strange land with different ways to do business then back in your homeland. Looks like your getting ready to go down a illegal road. I'd look at this very seriously before you embark. Thai jail is no joke and you could spend years in a hellhole. There's a decent movie called Breakdown Palace that gives a good description of life in a Thai prison.

Why would it be illegal to issue an invoice for consulting work in a one person operation?

That's the way I've always done it.

Who else is gonna legitimately issue the invoice?

An invoice may need to contain the name, address and taxpayer identification number of the business issuing the tax invoice.

Can a one person non-Thai operation obtain these?

Anyhow, I am unsure, I am not a lawyer.

That is why I suggested to check it out beforehand. Better to be legal knowingly than illegal and ignorant of it.
