3BB and WiFi problem

Recommended Posts

A mate of mine in Pattaya asks for some help. He's using 3BB and for the last couple of years he's had WiFi using 3BB's standard modem piggybacking with another brand WiFi modem.

Problem is, though in the past it's been OK for browsing, he's recently started trying to watch videos with an iPad and there is a constant loss of connection.

Should he buy 3BB's WiFi modem or would another brand be more likely to solve the problem?

Hi. I doubt that the problem comes from the modems themselves. You don't need that much performance to watch a video, even HD, on a smartphone/tablet.

I understand he uses 2 modems. Probably a non-wifi 3BB one + a wifi one used as router. Likely a configuration problem. Modern smartphones & tablets tend to use the most recent protocols. He must check that every 3 devices use the same one, or change for the best the 3 can support.

First check would be to try with another tablet or smartphone, using WiFi. If ok => maybe configuration on his tablet?

Second check: verify that a wired computer would receive correctly the videos, on each modem. If ok => WiFi confirugation ?

Buying a new modem should not be required, except if a test prove that a modem has a serious problem.

Finally had to dump 3BB. Just too unreliable. I know others that are happy with but it wasn't working for me. They kept insisting the problem was in my house and wanting to sell me 5000 worth of cable to run a new ugly line through the house. I switched to True and it has been much better. Had to occasionally reset the router during the heavy rains but that's about it

Coincidentally was talking to my neighbour last night and he was complaining of his 3BB connection which went down during the recent rains and stayed down. My True connection survived. My complaint is the speed of international connection is poor in the evenings, especially weekends when everyone else is trying to stream footy (or rugby). It might sound great to give me 30Mb to Bangkok but that isn't much use..... a connection to UK can drop below 1Mb.

OP, as Idefix is describing to you it is a process of elimination. If indeed the second modem/ router is there simply to provide Wireless (the standard 3BB should), I would be tempted to remove it completely if you can get into the configuration and clone it. Most modem routers come with both ethernet and wireless these days. It this is the only wireless device you have you may also be getting interference from other signals using the same channel and a channel change could help.

I had 3BB for several years when I lived in Pattaya and every time I was almost ready to switch to another ISP it would right itself and all would be well until it wasn't again. Rinse and repeat.

Spent some time today on this topic and had a look at thaivisa and what do you know, there's a thread from last April titled 3BB rooter (sic) - Can I replace it?

Anyway it seems my mate has decided he "needs", much as one decides the "need" for a new car, camera, phone or assault weapon, to get rid of the 3BB modem and buy a WiFi router and there is only the question of what brand and model. Suggestions welcome of course. And thanks for the responses thus far.

Ive had 3BB for just over a month, had some problems ie loss of signal.3BB technician came, tested the line,he found the condo cable wasnt up to the job, after explaining to reception, the condos technician, fixed the problem.

I would go to 3BB shop in Big C extra and buy router from there.
