I've read that the beach at Pattaya is not good for swimming. Is there a good swimming beach nearby or do you have to go to one of the Islands?

If your planning to spend the afternoon on the beach I think you'll enjoy the trip over to Koh Larn. I go to Samae Beach where your not pestered by the hawkers trying to sell you stuff as you relax, in addition they have the full length adjustable loungers with padding.

totally;

pattaya beach deal with fat topless white women

coral islanddeal with the hawkers who are more obnoxious then a 50 year old ggg after a lady drink

jomthien beach, nice enough but sometimes overun with russian families

it's always nice to take a tg over to the beaches, makes em feel good

In Jomtien beach a vivid vendor activity, I personally like it, but if you walk to the south there are less. Quiter beach is north of the post office, but be aware not to sit in the gay beach. The treatment on Jomtien is great. I mean assistance with the umbrellas etc. The water is dirty. Koh Larn is a very nice place with crystall clear water, but everything double priced and no attention for the guests. You can go there by speedboat ( 1500 BHT/boat ) or with the ferry ( 20 BHT/person )

As an alternative I tried Pattaya Water Park in Jomtiem. I really enjoyed it and the girls we took seemed to enjoy themselves also. A nice thing is its on the beach so you can come and go from the park to the beach. Grab an umbrella get some food, relax a while then back to the park to rinse off in fresh water. Was actually a very enjoyable day for 100Bht each, can't beat it!

Just to make it clear - I'm not going to Pattaya for the beach but since it is on a beach and I am a life long body surfer, I do want to go in the water at some point.

"life long body surfer"?

Uh, the deal is that there is no surf to surf, so to speak. No really, there are no waves. Think of the water as a giant warm bathtub (okay, the water's not real clean so just think that someone's already been in it).

Actually, the water won't kill you so long as you don't swallow it. A fun thing to do is get pulled on a banana raft - with your TG of course - and get dumped in the water. Jet skiing is another possibility. Bring a frisbee and play catch while in the water.

I have always been a "beach person". But the one at Pattaya holds little attraction for me in the swimming department. I go there because I am usualy too tired for anything more active during the day.

If you do venture in, you have to be constantly on the look out for the Jetski lads belting along looking at the beach for punters, not where they are going. I know an attempt has been made to rope off the swimming bit, but it's still dodgy.

Last trip, I was in the sea opposite Mikes, and found ( with my feet) at least 4 broken half bottles, each covered with marine life, gawd knows how long they were in water, luckily they were long enough to lay on their sides, so no ruined holiday

I prefer Kho-Larne beaches, especially for snorkeling. Mind you a large Beer Chang 100bht, but its worth it for the clearer water, I seem to find every obstacle on any beach; sharp rocks for cutting my foot, jellyfish-not too bad and those horrible black sea urchins brrrr. :nod

OK Fr. lust here are two alernative good beaches that are only a couple of miles out of town (70 Baht) and without the need to pay for speedboat or endure a long sea ride in a dodgy Thai boat.

1. Cosey beach. Location at the bottom of Soi Cosey Beach and close to Cosey Beach Hotel

2. Asia Beach. Location at the bottom of Soi Asia. and adjacent to the Asia Beach hotel.

Both of these beaches offer excellent facilities in the way of food, drink and watersport but are much smaller and qhiet compared to Pattaya Beach or Jomtien Beach.

I would confirm the comment re the beach below the Cosy Beach Hotel. I stayed in the Cosy Beach during my first visit in Feb and although its a bit too far out from the action the setting is superb and the beach is great.

Well supplied with beach bars and the one furthest from the Hotel does a great impression of a British brecky! :beer

one week six days and counting :banghead
