Am in town next month and thought it would be a good time of year to get some prescription sun glasses. My freinds went to the Op's in Mikes last trip, but had a bit of aggro with end product.

Anyone had good or bad service in this area ? Would appreciate any advise.

Eye examinations and prescriptions (both contact lenses and frames) are available. The only downside is that the examination isn't as sophisticated as in the West (no optical devices used) and high-end eyeglass frames aren't available. You may want to be examined at home and take your prescription with you. The frames should be acceptable to most people though. The prices of course are a bargain.

Buying eyeware in Bkk or Pattaya is much more reasonable than back home and from what my daughter tells me - you can purchase a thinner plastic base lense than what can be purchased in the states.

It is a plus to bring your own perscription when making a purchase overseas.

The only problem I experienced was trying to find a good flex frame. I did not have any luck on my last vacation.

Another advantage is the great looking ladies that work in optical shops.

I had good luck 2 yrs back getting some...But, get your eye exam done in the "homeland" as they like to just use the computerized process in Thailand..

I got the frames that the sunglasses attach to, {holes near the bow/frame }, it is so easy to put on the shades and take them off...I had a little monkey bend the hell out of them in Koh Samui and I was able to bend them back into place with no problem at all

I paid $175 {USD}

I got my last pair at Bettervision in Tesco Lotus on the Sukhumvit Highway just after Thepprasit Rd, good service and good value.

I got two pairs in Mikes Mall, just on the right as you go in. No problems and only a four hour service.

I supplied the frames, and the cost was 500 THB per pair.

Large selection of colours and although I supplied a prescription, they tested again to confirm it. Also got a pair of Bi-focal’s at 3,000B inc. flex frames.

Very friendly service, and after over a year, every time I need to go to Beach Road, they still stamp my parking slip for three hours free parking underneath the Mall.

I need what is known as a "complex" prescription and have just paid £330 for a pair of vari-focal glasses. (My GOOD eye is something like - 11, whilst the other is about - 13). I've yet to come across anyone with such a strong prescription. I had to get the glasses re-made I was having problems reading signs etc about 20 feet or so away. Too early to say whether the new pair are ok but they do seem to be better. Question is what happens in Thailand if you need to return glasses to the optician because, say, the variation part of the lens isn't quite right making them worse than useless?

Those varifocals are a problem. The lenses have to be a minimum depth to fit in the focal lengths. I have got used to mine now- well my brain has, but still find my self moving my head up and down to get the right bit for what I am looking at. The position on your nose can vary and I think this has to be compesated for too.

If it wasn't for the fact that print is getting smaller nowadays, I wouldnt bother with the reading bit ! 2guns
