I think your question has been left unanswered so I will give it a go (since I am a mossie neurotic.. ) A zapper is a plug-in violet lamp inside a grid of metal rods with a high voltage across them. The little devil is attracted to the light, and causes a short between the rods and is killed. The one I have doesn't give off an electric spark so doesn't disturb you in the night, but I also have some tennis bat like devices which use a much higher voltage and you sweep around and get a very satisfying zap when you hit one. Great fun!

The 'OFF' I buy at BigC for 200 baht in an orange spray can seems to work (deet 15%) I apply around ankles and back of the knees before I park myself on the sundowner beers. It doesn't seem to irritate me and isn't malodourous. But when the mosquitos are hungry they still bit elswhere.... can't cover myself completely. I also always carry a sachet of the cream in my pocket for those odd occasions. I certainly don't want this, and have been told that once you have had one type, you become susceptible to the much more dangerous category.
