Recently Thailand has been #1 in many studies but,
joekicker replied to phomsanuk's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
GeeZeus! How many people got killed in the political riots in the 57 countries that scored better in public participation? How many buildings do you need to burn down for a 10? You sure can prove a lot with statistics. . -
A LOT Of gambling sites are blocked in Thailand. Priority is to block the football-betting ones. .

DVD Player in the Hotel Room
joekicker replied to glenjean's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
He has an American flag. If he has a little, featureless US player and plugs it in in Pattaya, it will be quite spectacular. . -
Take a wild guess where most people go after deplaning at the BANGKOK International Airport located just outside BANGKOK, with hundreds of BANGKOK-registered taxis and (in the last few months) regular trains from the BANGKOK Skytrain system. Come on, take a stab at it. You already have one clue that it's not Pattaya. .

"Most folk" don't go to Pattaya at all. .

Well... okay. But you DO cause pain and death for the pleasure of that stack or ribs or bowl of soup. It's a quicker death as you say, and a shorter period of pain. But it's still pain and death. Vegetarians do it too, of course, trying to justify it by saying they are not doing it to animals, but plants are living things. I think we're discovering that some people wrestle with this and justify -- and some people don't give a xrap. .

They're not exactly at the front of the store, but there's still a good supply on the market in general. Heck, audio tape casettes are still pretty easy to get. . -
Indeed. They smoulder, like incense roughly. Any kind of market has lots of them. .

Like Colombian soccer. .
-
Indeed. What's barbaric here? Charging the players admission fee? .

And there you have it. Government steps in and gives meaning to the human suffering with a totally nonsensical, absolutely worthless, completely self-evident statement. Very helpful, that. The number of infected people has not gone negative. Imagine. .

What does "residing" in New York would have to do with it? I can think of a whole bunch of reasons. The Yankee network YES is about the only baseball shown in Thailand during the regular season of US club baseball. Lots of people grew up watching or listening to the Yankees. People may like the Yankees after watching Wang Chien-Ming. A lot of people in East Asia appreciate the big money poured into baseball development by the Yankees. People mentioned the rap videos. People already mentioned the cheap knockoffishness of it all, a nice in-the-sun cap for 100 baht. Japanese semi-worshipped Hideki Matsui.... and that just partially covers some of the reasons for cap-wearers in the the Thailand region, not completely by any means. And of course people from extreme western Yurp can buy Yankee hats in the Manu kit store. .
-
So you survived, or you're in temporary remission, or what? Good to see you well enough to type, but health update, please!! .

They probably won't fly that high, but it's very common that they breed up there, people carrying stuff up and down all the time, doing laundry on the roof, rain accumulating and so on. Don't be over-confident. On the other hand, don't be paranoid either. Almost no one gets dengue, after all. Mosquito bites are not fun for most people, and it's wise to have your body greatly covered, that's why they have cotton T-shirts, pants and so on. Some repellant is a good idea, why not, and mosquito coils can be very effective if you've got your legs under the table a lot, say. Common sense yes, obsession no. .

cheap handy gadget for viewing video files/photos
joekicker replied to Obsession's topic in Technical problems or questions.
Apart from the dedicated ones like Tivo and TrueVisions, I've never heard good things about these boxes. I notice the demo screen shot there is just movies from BitTorrent or whatever, too. Be careful. Getting them onto the drive is usually the tricky part. If you have to be there to do it, or go through some laborious copying operation, it's very iffy technology. I have a plain old VHS recorder hooked up to TrueVisions -- and some 3-hour tapes. It is NOTHING like Tivo-type convenience but I record shows I want to time-shift. That and Torrents keep me going. , -

Most DVD players sold in Thailand have a USB slot to play directly. I have no idea why it's not done in the West. . -
Makes a heck of a happy ending even better, though. .

What is your favorite non-native language word?
joekicker replied to bigdelta's topic in Idle Chit Chat
There is no such language as Eskimo. No language used by Eskimos has 99 words for ice (or snow, the usual version of this hoary old urban legend). English has seven very common words for it, though. One Innuit language (or dialect, your choice) has 10, but not all 10 are as common as the seven most comon English words. This is the kind of happy horsepuckey that always comes up with the appeals for grants to study and preserve all the disappearing languages, though. . -
Final serious warning? .

Does anyone here use OpenOffice?
joekicker replied to bigdelta's topic in Technical problems or questions.
This is neither a good nor economical reason to get Open Office. Get the much smaller and dedicated Word Viewer from Microsoft for free. It lets you see and print Word documents. Of course so does Wordpad half the time. Microsoft gives it away. You can get it here. If you really don't trust them, get it here. . -

It's most common in the rainy season, which starts about end of May in the North, and rolls on down - it's about middle of the rainy season now in Central/Pattaya. However, it is always around, and you can get it anywhere, Bangkok included. The past year it was more common in the South (across the bay from Pattaya) but it's not like malaria - there are no true safe zones and every region had lots of cases and some deaths. .

Yes, a good post, EXCEPT I bet that for this purpose an education visa would be taken as residence -- BUT you need to ask the Germans, not a bunch of barroom immigration experts. If you're going to school, you have to actually reside in the country, even though it might not be, technically, a residence visa. I'd note here that in Thailand, the permission to stay indefinitely in the country (such as a retirement visa) is a Non-Resident visa, but it certainly is accepted as small-R residence at any western embassy including European ones. .

Ask jacko about the great coverups in Thailand. He's got hundreds of them. I'm not sure why you'd say such a thing without even doing a really fast search on Google. The English language press constantly "mentions" dengue. It's the rainy season. There are more mosquitoes. Dengue is a bitxh. That's why the press in all languages in Thailand "mentions" it so very, very often. May you have the mildest case of dengue in history. This is a no-fun ailment without doubt. Get well soon, too. .
