I was in Bangkok recently, and try as I might, I never found a taxi that would use the meter. They all quoted me a fixed price well above the meter price. I expect the same result in Pattaya or anywhere else the govt makes one of these pronouncements. Smoke and mirrors signifying nothing in the end (sorry, William). Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

Another popular issue that the govt will say they're going to fix, and nothing will come of it. In the case of the motorcycle taxis, after the last crackdown, rates went UP! Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

Let the Thai society know about your retirement life in Thailand
MM replied to Kanokwan's topic in Expat Issues
Come on, guys. This could be a very useful and interesting study for both the expat population and the government (ha!) decision makers. I know more of you can help out. I've done the questionnaire and it's both interesting and well thought out. Get in there and let this lady crunch the numbers! Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk- 25 replies

Hooters on Beach Road- The Food (updated Dec. 20, 2016)
MM replied to Evil Penevil's topic in Restaurants and food
Well, in my opinion, you don't NEED to tip anywhere, and there's no set amount or percentage. However, if an establishment imposes a mandatory 10% tip, I'm comfortable with not tipping beyond that unless I encounter service above and beyond the norm, e.g. a blow job at Hooters. Hooters on Beach Road- The Food (updated Dec. 20, 2016)
MM replied to Evil Penevil's topic in Restaurants and food
According to tallguy (and looking at the odd priced line items on the bill shown above, I tend to agree), the high priced food includes the 17% already, so it's not "on top of", but built into the price. If you order something for 599 baht (2 chicken wings, LOL), the bill should be 599 baht with a breakdown of where the items are counted. If you choose to pay that 599 baht, why would you care about how the 599 is allocated? It's just what it said on the menu. I personally can accept that method as being more honest than 599++ as some hotels and restaurants do. Also, by their showin -

That's actually good, since youre not paying more than you expected from reading the menu...it's just a hidden , extra cost item. -

So the rack price you see on the menus actually includes VAT + Service 10%? -

British pensioners arrested and detained in Pattaya
MM replied to MM's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
One source said that this citizen complaint went to the Interior Ministry after the Pattaya Police declined to take action. The Interior Ministry, and possibly the PM, required the police and the Army to take action to root out this nest of aged gamblers under the auspices of Article 44 (absolute power). -

British pensioners arrested and detained in Pattaya
MM replied to MM's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Agreed! Some reports say the woman didn't have the money for bail. I doubt this because I am sure her "gang of bridge players" would have chipped in to pay the bail. The more believable reports are that she wouldn't admit and sign a document confessing to something she was not guilty of. This clearly shows that the police still don't get how bad this looks for Thailand. As of this morning, the story has gone international, and I am waiting for the "PM" to start getting questions about it and throwing someone to the wolves..or worse yet, saying something incredibly inappropriate. -

Some great takes on this story.... Voice of America ABC Australia New York Post The Guardian and over 100 more citations...it has definitely hit all the major news outlets. And yet, the BIB are still adamant that they were justified in fining and detaining them. The PR fallout from this will be horrendous. -

I did..that's where I got the story too. And, I did send the link to the Daily Mail Facebook page (in a somewhat indirect fashion). -

Send it on to them. It's a hoot! -
You have to shake your head at the ludicrous behavior of the 50 Army, District officials and Pattaya police who raided a bridge club and found no gambling occurring, so charged them with possession of more than 120 playing cards (as a group) based on an 81 year old forgotten law. Clearly this bunch was a threat to peace and order! This story should go viral in the international news...it would serve them right.
