  1. No, you are correct. My mistake. I was thinking of a different model GE90 that are installed on the newer 777 models (-300ER, -200LR and -200F).
  2. When, where, and on what aircraft did a GE90 explode?
  3. I just finished reading the latest press on the subject and it definitely looks like Boeing is leaning towards a "clean sheet" replacement for the 737, but not before 2020. It would appear their priorities, at the moment, are the 787-8, 787-9, 787-10 (a stretch of the -9), some enhancements to their already extremely successful 777-300ER and then, finally, a 737 replacement. Boeing CEO Jim McNerney gave them an out with this statement, "... think what we're learning today about what our customers need and what technologies we have available to us, we are leaning toward development in the 2020 timeframe, but we're going to confirm that as we go through it this year, reserving the option - if we're wrong - as we go through the analysis to re-engine. But I don't think it's going to go that way."
  4. No. The final decision, one way or the other, hasn't been made. "Jim McNerney, chairman and chief executive, said Boeing was "leaning" toward a 737 replacement rather than updating the plane with new engines..."
  5. After getting divorced and realizing I would be "back out there" looking for "companionship" I read as much on this subject as I could find on the Internet and elsewhere, and pretty much came to the same conclusions.
  6. Turns out you are correct, which I found surprising given the U.S. government's habit of sticking their nose into every aspect of our lives. Having been told that by a well seasoned traveler shortly after 9/11, I assumed it to be a govt. regulation. Apparently it is up to the airports and/or the airlines. "How much time should I allow before my flight? SFO suggests that you check with your airline directly for its recommended arrival time. For domestic flights, most airlines suggest arriving two hours before departure. For international flights, most airlines recommend arriving three hours before departure." http://www.flysfo.com/web/page/orphan/faq/index.html#2
  7. I'm sure mickeysoft would beg to differ, but according to these statistics (see link below) Firefox surpassed ms-internet exploiter as the most popular browser two years ago this month. Google Chrome is coming on strong. I just don't trust Google anymore than mickeysoft so I've been hesitant to check out Chrome. http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
  8. Yep. Garuda Indonesia Airways has a very poor record. Weren't they blacklisted from the EU for awhile?
  9. I would guess having to be there 2 hours before departure was for the domestic leg of the flight and that counts towards the Federal regulation requiring all passengers on International flights to check in 3 hours before departure. As I always comply, I don't know if it is really enforced or not.
  10. Qantas has had a long string of problems since they started outsourcing some of their maintenance a few years ago. It is all about the airlines trying to save money by cutting corners on repairs. Here is an interesting take of the problem: http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/flightbl...ry-24---fr.html

  19. Are there any government regulations requiring you to check in X number of hours before an international flight?
  20. "DATE:19/01/11 SOURCE:Air Transport Intelligence news Boeing gets Chinese approval for 200-aircraft deal Boeing has received Chinese government approval for orders placed by Chinese airlines for 200 aircraft, worth $19 billion. The aircraft comprise narrowbody 737s and widebody 777s and will be delivered between 2011 and 2013, says the US manufacturer. Boeing was not immediately available to confirm whether the aircraft are included in previously announced commitments, or whether they are already included in the airframer's firm order backlog." http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2011/...craft-deal.html Only Flightglobal, who is London based and extremely bias in favor of Airbus, would put that last sentence in the story.
  21. Really? Why has there been persistent rumors for the last couple of years that the Germans want out of the EU, or, at the very least, to dump the Euro and go back to the Mark?
  22. Another way to phrase that would be, 910 Boeing 777s have been delivered to date. That is 1820 engines at 2 per aircraft. How many Airbut A380s with Rolls Engines have been delivered? 20? Less, I believe. Maybe 12 or 15? Let's say 15 at 4 per aircraft is 60 engines. So, what are the odds.....
  23. When it first came out it was considered a great movie and won several Academy Awards. I bought the DVD a couple of years ago and as a Veteran who lived through that period I can say there are so many things wrong with that movie it is hard to understand what the public saw in it, other than it was one of the first Vietnam War films made and, perhaps, gave the American public something they needed at that time in U.S. history. That said, other actors on my list... Christopher Walken, "The Deer Hunter." He 'stole the show' from DeNiro and walked away with the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. John Cazale, "The Deer Hunter." Jack Lemmon, "Irma la Douce." Shirley MacLaine, "Irma la Douce." Lou Jacobi, "Irma la Douce." Audrey Hepburn, "My Fair Lady." Rex Harrison, "My Fair Lady." Stanley Holloway, "My Fair Lady." George C. Scott, "Patton." Robin Williams (as an actor), "Good Morning, Vietnam." Another movie with some serious flaws, but yet, overall, a good film. William Holden, "The World of Suzie Wong." Sir Alec Guinness, "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" (Television). Peter Sellers, "A Shot in the Dark." David Niven, "The Pink Panther." Robert Duvall, "The Great Santini." Denholm Elliott, "Saint Jack." It would be a long list.... enough for now. :)
  24. Harrison Ford, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (Indiana Jones). Jacqueline Bisset, "Bullitt."
