November 2008 Golf Festival Possibly the greatest golf event in all of Asia, the RideHer Cup is now in it’s 7th year. This 5th major will be taking place in Pattaya on Monday 3rd November and will herald the start of a 2-week golf festival in Thailand. This year’s programme is bigger and better than anything that has gone before. We are featuring 3 great tournaments followed by a golf tour to Hua Hin and Loy Krathong celebrations at the fascinating Rose Garden Riverside Resort. Here’s what’s happening: Monday November 3rd – RideHer Cup This event pitches the mighty forces of Europe vs. USA in a four-ball match play format. We accept entries from players of all nationalities – the captains will draw lots to select their international guest players. It all kicks off with the registration party at FLB on Sunday 2nd November at 8pm where the captains will select their teams. Then we leave the Tara Court on Pratamnuk Hill at 0900 on Monday for the tournament at Burapha. Entries are restricted to 48 players. We only have 12 places left so please reserve your place fast to avoid disappointment. It costs THB 3,650 including green fee, buggy, caddy, polo shirt, buffet, transport and prizes. There is a legendary party and prize giving at FLB in the evening with a western buffet. Wednesday November 5th – The Baby Dolls Banana Trophy No – this is not a used banana hunt in the drains of the Jacuzzi! It is a 4 man Texas Scramble at one of the best courses in Thailand – the brand new Siam Plantation Course. Teams of 4 players will compete for the inaugural Baby Dolls Banana Trophy. We will leave from Tara Court at 0900 on Wednesday 3rd and tee off at 10.30. You can enter as a team of 4 players or an individual (we will assign you to a team). The cost is THB 3,550 including green fee, buggy, caddy, polo shirt, buffet, transport and prizes. The party will kick off at Baby Dolls at 8.30 with fun, food and frolics all part of the package! Friday November 7th – The Catz Open This famous event is in its 6th year and is well established in the international golfing calendar. This competition is an individual stabelford format for the Catz Open Trophy with special prizes for longest drive and nearest the pin. This year's competition will be held at Phoenix. Transport will leave the Tara Court sometime between 0945 and 1015 depending on your tee time. The cost is THB 2.950 including green fee, buggy, caddy, polo shirt, buffet, transport and prizes. There will be a party at 8.30 with a pig roast and lots of buffet items. Sunday November 9th to Thursday November 13th – Hua Hin Golf Trip In the past, we have visited the River Kwai, Chiang Mai and Phuket. This year’s trip will see the golfing hordes invade Hua Hin to party and play! Transport will leave Pattaya at noon on Sunday 10th November arriving late afternoon in Hua Hin. The golf programme includes playing the brand new Banyan Course on Monday 10th and the spectacular Black Mountain course on Wednesday 12th. We will have an optional golf day on Tuesday 11th at Palm Hills. Our hotel is located in the heart of Hua Hin so we can enjoy the bars and restaurants in town within staggering distance of your room! On Wednesday 12th we will head for the Rose Garden Riverside Resort to the west of Bangkok for a unique Loy Krathong experience on the riverside. This will include a dinner, 1 hour free flow bar and the traditional floating of krathong on their private riverside garden. Our final golf day will be Thursday 13th when we play the Rose Garden Golf course – a little beauty right across the road from the resort. Then we saddle up for the return to Pattaya. There will be a non-golfers programme for the Hua Hin trip and we are also offering a chance for players and non-golfers to travel from Pattaya to join us at the Rose Garden. There is a separate post in this section with the detailed programme and prices for the Hua Hin trip. For more information or to register for the golf tournaments and the Hua Hin trip, please email sales@solargolf.co.uk and we will record your entry and let you know how and when to pay. If you are in Pattaya, just call me on 0836 184449 or call in to our office on Pratamnuk Hill. Look out for the Solar Golf sign between soi 5 and 6 on Pratamnuk. This should be a spectacular fortnight with lots of golf and even more partying! Get your bookings in fast – first come first served! Solar

Hub Thanks for pointing this out. I am sure the culprit will get back to you on this subject! We have employed the services of a highly experienced tour organiser to help run things this year. According to his CV, he organised a European Tour for a large group in his last job so we didn't hesitate to hire him. Doggie -

Great to have you back Hub and we look forward to welcoming Derek to his first ever RideHer. I will never forget the sight of you holstering your clubs and setting off up the road when we announced your playing partner. A classic! Looks like another great event this year. Doggie -
I would go along with your choices in Pattaya. Laem Chabang is always a must and Siam Old Course is probably a better choice than Plantation right now. We played Old Course last week and it was in good condition for the time of year. I have been round Red Mountain in Phuket and I think it will give Blue Canyon some competition. It is a spectacular landscape and has the advantage that you can take buggies. Blue Canyon is walking only. I have not been to Blue Canyon for a couple of years so I can't comment on its current condition. I know there have been some shareholder arguments at Blue Canyon so these might have had a negative impact on the maintenance. I plan to go to Phuket sometime before October so I will update this forum with any new information. Have a good trip. Doggie

Our recent experience is that Eva are very strict on the 20kg maximum economy baggage allowance. Your golf clubs have to be included in the 20kg max or else they will charge you excess as per their web site. I think KLM are the same but we don't use them much. You can try asking your agent to get you an extar allownace for your clubs - Solar Golf often arrange this for clients that book a package with us. If you are just buying flight only then I don't think you have much chance. BA fly direct and will allow you one set of clubs in addition to your 20kg allowance but they are expensive. Your best bet is to fly Emirates who will carry one set of clubs in addition to your 20kg. Good airline with fast connections from London, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow via Dubai. Best of luck. The Rideher Cup 2008 is open for entries! Possibly the greatest golf event in Asia, this prestigious tournament is in it's 7th Year. This matchplay event pitches Europe's finest golfers against the cream of the USA. Mix in a few Aussies and Kiwis, blend with a Thai or two and you have a field of the world's greatest golfers! The event is delicately poised with 3 victories each to Europe and USA. This year's event will take place on Monday 3rd November at Burapha. Once again, European Captain Deuce will be leading his team of finely honed professionals against the USA captained by Grendel. Full details about the event are on this web site. Entries will be limited to 24 for each team so get your name down fast. To enter, post the following here on the board: Your board name, handicap, nationality and shirt size. Then send me an email to sales@solargolf.co.uk with your full name and your email address. I will then add you to the circulation list for more information about the event. The cost will be around 3,650 baht including: Green fee Caddy fee Buggy - 1 per player Transport Prizes Souvenir polo shirt Food and party at FLB on 3rd November. We will be holding a Captains selection evening at FLB on Sunday 2nd November around 8.30 pm. This is where the captains select the pairings and order of play! Last year's event was won by the USA so the winning captain will have the honour of choosing the menu for dinner. I will be in touch with Grendel to get his input. I look forward to a full turnout for the 2008 RideHer Cup. Get those entries rolling in! The RideHer Cup will be the start of a 2 week programme of golf activities including a road trip to Hua Hin departing Pattaya on Sunday 9th November. I will post more details about the golf and social programme over the next few months. Doggie

Pattaya Beer Garden - We are open!
doghaus replied to PattayaPete's topic in Bars/Gogos/Business Owners' Forum
I called in on Monday afternoon after our golf round and again last night for the opening party. Monday afternoon saw a decent group of freelancers hanging around at the tables around the perimeter and a bunch of guys seated at the bar. Most unusual for Pattaya - the guys seemed shy to approach the girls despite the injection of 30 baht alcohol. It seems that they need to "learn the drill" for drinking in a freelancer bar. Or maybe the 30 baht alcohol catches their attention more than no barfines to pay! The place is really comfortable to hang out. A good breeze blows through and it is enormous! Enough room for an indoor go-kart track to run around the bar. We went back last night and ate there. Chicken and cashew arrived within 10 minutes - tasty and tender. It will be interesting to see how the place develops. The girls need to get some action if they are to be attracted to the bar. There are plenty of board members who post about the injustice of bars and go-gos charging bar fines so here is the answer to their prayers! Doggie -
The 2007 RideHer Cup Golf Match - 5th November 2007 Burapha Golf Club USA vs. Europe (including some representatives from the rest of the world) Welcome to the 2007 RideHer cup - the only golf competition where having fun is more important than how you play! Everyone is welcome to join in the fun, even if you are a terrible player. Here are the arrangements and rules for the event with an explanation of the handicap calculations. Your entry fee of 3400 baht includes golf shirt, transport, green fees, caddy fees, buggies and the evening party with prizes. Caddy tips are not included - it is common to tip the caddy at least 200 baht and up to 300 baht if she (or he) is good. Selecting the matches All players meet up at FLB on Sunday evening 4th November around 9 pm. Please ensure you come along to the registration evening before 10pm if you have registered or you are on the wait list. We will register your entry, collect the money and explain the travel arrangements. If any players have not registered and paid by 10pm we will give their places to players on the wait list. The captains will then select the pairings and list them in the order of play. When both Captains have made their listings, the organiser will collect the lists and announce the matches and the order of play. Travel and arriving at the golf course Players will meet the bus at the Residence Gardens. The Residence Gardens is located on Thappaya Road on the left hand side between Pattaya and Jomtien. The bus will depart at 9.00am prompt. Please don't miss the bus, as it will not wait! We strongly recommend booking at least 2 wake-up calls to make sure that you are ready to go at the appointed hour. Before you board the bus, please see the organizer who will tag your bag. On arrival at the golf course you should identify your clubs which will be off-loaded and handed over to your caddies. They will load them on the buggy and will meet you in the buggy park. If you have pre-booked rental clubs, these will be distributed at the Residence Gardens. There are facilities to hire clubs at the course – please inform us 7 days prior to the tournament if you need rental clubs. Once your clubs are offloaded, go to the changing rooms and put on your golf shoes. Then, meet up in the buggy park. The scorer will have sorted out the cards for each match so make sure you collect these and that you know how the handicap system will work. We will be starting at two tees. Your buggy will be tagged with your match number and either A or B to identify your starting tee. The caddies will direct you to the correct tee. When your match is announced, step up to the tee; last year’s winning team will tee off first and then you all hit away. Men will play off white tees and ladies off reds. Remember to get past the ladies tee - see special rules below! The matches Each group will play 2 matches with a point available for each match. Course B will be played as a Texas Scramble/Ambrose. Both players in the team hit their drives and select which drive will be used. Thereafter, the players each hit a shot from the position of the best-placed ball until the team has holed out. The second ball should be placed within one scorecard length of the selected ball and surfaces cannot be changed The handicap allowance will be 1/4 the combined handicap of the 2 players in the team. Strokes will be according to the stroke index of the hole. So, a team comprising an 18 and a 28 handicapper will receive 11.5 (12) strokes and a team with a 14 and an 18 will receive 8 strokes. In this case, the first team will receive 4 strokes for 18 holes and this will be reduced to 2 strokes for course A to be taken on the 2 holes with the lowest stroke index on course A. To add a bit of spice, the team will be required to select a minimum of 3 drives for each partner on the 9 holes. The holes will be played as straight match play and the match will be determined as a win (1 point) or a half (1/2 point) for the 9 holes. Course A will be played as four ball better ball. Each player in the team plays every shot at the hole and the best net score for the hole wins that hole. The handicaps for the four balls will be full handicap allowance stroking off the lowest handicap player. So, in the above example, the 14 handicapper will play off scratch, his partner will get 4 strokes and the players in the other team will get 4 and 14 strokes respectively for 18 holes. The number of strokes received will then be halved for the 9 holes that are being played. Strokes will be allowed according to the SI off the holes on course B. The four balls will also be match play with the lowest net winning the hole and the match determined as a win or a half. The nineteenth hole At the end of the round, each team should submit two cards signed by them and their opponents with the result of the Texas/Ambrose and the four balls on 2 separate cards. The scorer will collect the cards and will score the matches in conjunction with the 2 captains. The overall result will remain a secret until the evening party. After you have showered, you should have time for a drink in the clubhouse. When the competition is finished and all players are refreshed, the bus will leave for Pattaya. Players will be returned to the Residence Gardens together with your golf clubs. Bonus prizes There will be a longest drive and nearest the pin competition on course A (the fourball nine). The nearest pin is on the 6th hole and the longest drive on the 8th hole. The longest drive must come to rest on the fairway and will be marked with a stake and marker card. The nearest pin must be on the green. The stakes will be carried by the first match out and should be placed by them after the respective best shots in their match. If none of the players hit the respective fairways or green, the stakes should be left on the tee for the next group. If you beat the previous best for longest drive or nearest the pin, move the stake forward to the position where the ball came to rest and add your name below the previous entry. Remember, it is only your first shot that counts for these competitions - no mulligans (see below) or provisionals! We will also have some other "fun" competitions running during the matches - these will be announced the previous evening. Special rules - Mulligans If you don't understand what a Mulligan is, ask the organiser at the launch party! Each team of 2 players will be allocated 4 Mulligans. 2 Mulligans may be used per 9 holes from anywhere on the course excluding the green. No carryovers allowed. If you don't use your 2 Mulligans on the front nine you lose them on the back nine. A little twist to add some spice to the event, opponents can use appropriate (tee box or anyplace) Mulligans to make an opponents team member (not his partner) shoot his or her shot over again if you think your opponent's shot was too good or was just a lucky one. This is called the Reverse Mulligan! The Reverse Mulligan cannot be invoked on the green. Obviously, you will lose that Mulligan for your own use if it is played on an opponents shot. No Mulligans can be used against opponents or for themselves when any longest drive or nearest pin prizes are being played for on the shot. If you call a mulligan, the ball must be dropped before playing the shot. The only exception is on a tee shot or in the sand when the ball may be placed. Other special rules Any male player failing to hit his drive past the ladies tee box will have to play his next shot with his trousers round his ankles. The handicap limits are 28 for men and 36 for ladies. If you have an official handicap that is higher than this, you can still enter and play off the maximum of 28 or 36. The pussy prize. The pussy prize will be awarded to the player who leaves a birdie attempt short of the hole by the longest margin. If a player has a birdie putt (only counts if the ball is on the green with the shot before the birdie putt) and leaves the birdie putt short of the hole, the opponents will be required to estimate the distance that the putt is short of the hole. The name of the player and the distance short of the hole should be reported to the organiser at the end of the round. Shortest drive. This competition will run at the same hole as longest drive. A stake for shortest drive will be provided to the first group and should be placed on the fairway at the distance of the shortest drive for their group. Players failing to pass this stake with their drives should collect the stake and place it back on the fairway (or possibly the tee or even behind the tee) with their name added to the list. The last group should collect the stake Furthest from the pin. This competition will run at the same hole as the nearest the pin competition. Same rules as the shortest drive competition. This stake will probably be found in some interesting places - it cannot be thrown in the water! If a shot lands in the water, the stake should be placed on the landside of the hazard at the approximate distance from the hole that the water shot landed. The Jomtien Beach Trophy. This will be awarded to the player who takes the most shots to escape from a bunker on the back nine. Nominations should be given to the organiser at the end of the round and should be verified by the opponents. Players name and number of bunker shots should be submitted to the organiser at the end of the competition. The RideHer Cup presentation party The RideHer Cup presentation party will take place at 8.30 pm in the FLB Bar on 5th November. There will be a hot food buffet on offer and then we will have the presentation around 11.00 pm. This is followed bya competition involving the FLB girls! Last rule - have fun!! If you need to call the event organizer – 0836 184449.

Laem Chabang for 2500 including cart????? That is impossible at the normal rates in high season. The only time you will see a rate like that is on a sport day in low season when the course offers a green fee of 850 baht on one day in the week. The sport days end in October. Doggie

Hi all! I have been lost in the Scottish mist without reliable internet access! Apologies to all for the long silence! I am back "doon sooth" tomorrow and should be online properly the following day to post an entry list. The event is nearly full with the 48 player limit getting near! Cheers from sunny St Andrews!
