Chinese New Year

Hi everyone,

 

A quick question. In Feb is it best to stay in Pattaya before, during or after the Chinese New Year? I know its on 9-12th Feb this year. Is everything closed during that time, can you get buses, taxis etc. Any problems during that time. Is it good to catch the New Year celebrations?

 

Any advice thoughts are most welcome!

Everything is open, plus they bring the dragons through the bars at night, suppose to be good luck. Plus its fun to watch.

I was in pattaya for chinese new year earlier this year,the celebrations started at 6 in the morning with firecrackers going off all around our hotel,great when you go to go to sleep at 5am...

We took our girlfriends out later that day to the elephant rides for a relaxing afternoon,when some very nice people of the chinese persuasion let off more fireworks next to our elephant,being on a 4 ton elephant whilst it is bucking is a good way to get your honey to hold on to you for dear life

So yeah, chinese new year in pattaya.....I would recommend it highly!

Chinese New Year is a good time to be in Pattaya! Parades, Dragons, firecrackers, drums, cymbals,.....noisy but fun. Lots of vendors in town and along Beach Road...many from northern Thailand. Big crowds, but good humored. I always look forward to the celebrations. The Thai-Chinese really enjoy the festivities, and as long as you like crowds...you will too!

Great time !! Totally agree.

 

I just thought some people here would like to know China is the No 1 source of tourist for LOL last year. @ CNY 2003 alone nearly 1 million come - & the figure is estimated to get grown to 2 million in 2 years time. Perhaps some would consider having to share the hotel with 600 chinese guests is too much fun - too much reality !!!!

iv'e been a few times during chinese new year, the funniest sights are on the beach during the day. you would'nt believe how many people they can cram on to the day trip boats.

FYI, the Chinese New Year holidays in China run a full week - Feb, 9 - 15. Most people are off work, and over 100 million travel during this period, although most just go to their hometown to visit family.

Super fun but very little sleep for a few days if you get the the chance to light the fire crackers run quickly because the fuse is only a second or 2.

pardon my ignorance, but is this the same as Song Kran? which was in April last year? When everybody & everything gets wet?

If not, what are the dates for Song Kran this year?...both BKK & Pattaya? They are generally different.

I was there in 2002. It starts the 9th of February. It wasn't as crowded as i thought but then again it was just after 9/11. It was alot of fun but the Firecrackers were a little too loud.

As far as I'm aware, Songkran is officially from the 13th April to the 15th April but the madness tends to continue in Pattaya until about the 20th (?). The New Year itself is on the 15th April.

Per Pattaya at Night site:

 

In most provinces of Thailand the Sonkran Festival

will be celebrated from April 13 to April 15, 2005.

 

During the last few years, the festival in Pattaya happened during one full week, starting April 13. with water splashing on its very last day.

 

As for 2005, we have to wait the decision of the local government. Usually the City makes its decision during February or March only.

Songkran is great fun, but whatever you do, don't leave LOS while the madness is still going on. Just because you're carrying a suitcase and obviously heading for the airport wont make you any less of a target. Once in Phuket I saw a whole tuk-tuk full of farangs set upon by about 20 people with buckets, and I shudder to think what their flight home was like. Bloody good fun otherwise though.
