The government turned down the appeal and stated that the rule would remain for the foreseeable future (until Taksin decided otherwise) I was told this a while back.

If they do hit all the beer bars then i suppose the punters would have to turn to FLB, Gogo's or even better The Blues Factory.

As I always say when this subject comes up, bring in on! Hell make it 11pm.

 

Benefits:

 

1. End of bar fines. Just meet the girl after work. Bar fines really only work for us old codgers who want to be in bed by 1am and can't be bothered hanging around until 2am plus,

 

2. For those who want to drink unlicensed sellers will pop up and mini street/beach parties will evolve. Cheaper beer!

 

3. The 'aving it large Ibiza type crowd will go elsewhere. Top stuff.

Maybe there's another angle to what's happening. Consider this.

 

My recollection is that Toxin never really stood in the spotlight when it came to the so-called "Social Order Policy", but always took a step back and let Puritannical, Preacher or whoever be the focus of whatever was going on. It occurred to me that perhaps this was a policy he didn't necessarily believe in, but was something he perceived, probably correctly, as being popular with people whose votes he needed. Now the election is over and he has the majority he needs, he no longer needs to compromise or cow-tow to such people but can do things the way he wants regardless of public opinion. I think he may be such a man.

 

If this is the case, there is at least a possibility that his re-election with a big majority might be good news rather than bad. I don't think that morality is high on his personal list of priorities, and he no longer needs to pretend that it is. He is a businessman and I would expect him to behave like one. All the better for us if he does IMHO. Hopefully this bar stuff will slip down the agenda. If the man wants greatness, he won't get it by closing bars in a futile attempt to fight a battle that I'm sure he's intelligent enough to know he can never win. He will have bigger fish to fry, that will give him greater kudos and greater accolades.

 

None of this works if there's any social or moral basis behind these leaflets, which is why I would at least consider the possibility that the origin and purpose of this threatened first round of post-election bar closures is far more important than the mere fact of them.

 

But then what do I know about Thai politics?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I find the crescendo of noise in some parts of Pattaya makes me want to just pass through them as quickly as possible. Instead of trying to crack down on closing time and the hours during which bars are allowed to open, I feel his time would be better spent on introducing AND more importantly enforcing limits on the maximum volume of music coming from various outdoor bars all trying to outdo each other

 

Hopefully, monkeyman's assessment is right but again I know fuck all about Thai politics.

I think Thai's will not go against what the King says though, and politicians can use the words of the King to take actions, and justify those actions by saying they are being loyal subjects and following the Kings wishes.

 

As much as we think things should not change, I think deep down, we know they will eventually.

As a former political speechwriter (paid liar) I can vouch that the guy who gives the speech is the last to see it!

Fortunately I never had to do any speech writing but during my civilian career with the USAF I had to write letters and talking papers for Air Force personnel as high as 2 Star Generals and members of the Senior Executive Service. Unfortunately they were very picky about what was submitted to them as sometimes it took me 4 or 5 attempts before they were happy. Some of the other staff would have been happy if they could get theirs through on 5 attempts. Like you said alot of lies, on one occassion I had to submitted to our headquarters how many people we had working of some specific weapon systems. When I got the input from the different organizations, which was highly inflated as they were hoping to receive more funding, I tried unsuccessfully to reduce the numbers. About a month latter the shit hit the fan when headquarters said that they were now going to manage those systems so they were going to reduce our maning by those numbers that were submitted. We then had to make up another story that we didn't fully understand the original tasking.

Emil, Talking papers, briefing notes, speeches all samesame game for sure.

I remember that kind of crap all too well.

My intructions were often along the lines of, "Give him 20 minutes but don't say anything."

Often the pusillanimous bosses would be afraid to credit us with any brains so would invent stupid reasons why we had to say or do something instead of showing us some respect and leveling with us.

I had one fave boss though. In my job interview, I asked what the big boss was like. She didn't blink, just said, "You know, at the convention, it's hookers in the hotel..."

I sat there and thought, "God, do I want to work with you!" She'd go to a top level meeting and come back and say "We have to do this because blabla...the real agenda is..."

Best boss I ever had: great, smart and tough as nails.
