Just wondering if this is a difficult time to book a room like xmas week or can I take my time and do a little more research when I get there in Sept.

Hotel bookings in November are more likely to be affected by Loy Krathong than Thanksgiving which tends to pass pretty much unnoticed.

Loy Krathong weekend many hotels are booked out. I always liked having my hotel reservation in hand before I arrive.

I was there last year at that time and I didn't have any trouble getting a room, in fact I changed twice for something better each time. You shouldn't have a problem unless your set on staying at a particular area and are not flexible. Also there have been at least another 2,000 hotel rooms open or will soon open since last Thanksgiving.

So which date does Lol Kruthong fall on this year ?

Joe

Joe,

15 Nov for the actual full-moon krathong launching stuff but in places like Chiang Mai the festival runs from 14-16 Nov.

Joe,

No, mate. It is celebrated on the full moon of the 11th (?) lunar month. Basically, it means that the rivers will be at their highest level then and that links in to the river goddess etc. It really is worth making the effort to get to Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya or Sukhothai for the festival proper.

My pattaya ago-go calander says the 16th Nov is full moon/Loy Kratang.

does anyone know if the the do anything special at the "full moon" festivle for Loy Kratong?

steve as for as "thanksgiving" that is just an American celebration, all be it the greatest holiday of the year, 4 days off of work, no presents or cards to shop for, eat and drink to excess and then lay in front of the TV and drink fart and watch football the rest of the day while continuing to stuff your face and nap.

as far as afectting your trip, the only concideration you you might have is with the airlines as it ia the most traveled day in the US

Thanks for all the replies. It really helps, and yes I'm well aware that Thanksgiving means nothing outside the US, which is why I gave the specific dates. I was in Phuket last November. It might have been during that holiday. Is that when they make the paper boats with candles and send them out to sea?

Steve,

Loy Kratong bounces around like Easter. Last year it was a day or two after Thanksgiving. In 2001 I was in Pattaya when it was on 31 October.

I never had a problem in November doing a "walk-up" (no reservation) for a room.

I go every year at that time. I just like to have my first night booked.
