Not afraid to fly but get bored as hell as i'm usually unable to sleep in flights.

I take 2 nicotine patches, 2 valium and copius amounts of whiskey.....sleep to Narita, wake for the 1.5 hour layover, back to sleep until BKK.

Wake up pretty refreshed, no jet lag and ready to go.

Some airlines have a special programm to deal with fear of flying. If you think it is getting near phobia, I would suggest you look for such a programm or seek professional help. If it is a masterable fright or more like an uneasyness I would recommend that you take a short haul flight very shortly before you have to go on the long trip to LOS (I mean within a week or maximun two weeks preceding your flight). It will accustom you and you will be used to the sensations that generate distress for you. Ask your doctor to prescribe Lorazepam to you and take it 1 hour before you go to the airport (don't drive yourself). Take it once only in a very high dose (consult physician, and forget the whisky...).

I imagine that it's the take off and landing that the scariest.

Best advice; Don't think about it. The fear is created by your mind, so stop thinking about it. Either lay back and relax or do something to distract yourself from the thoughts.

Generally I fall asleep just as the aeroplane is taking off. That's relaxed.

Try Eurostar and the Trans Siberion Express via Moscow and Hanoi etc etc

I don't know how long the journey takes, London to Bangkok, guess about a month.

Not sure how much it would cost

Some airlines run these Fear of flying courses around the UK, may be worth going on one of those.

BA certainly offer a course like this, which includes a short flight at the end. Perhaps also something from your doctor to help you relax would help but if you do need to take some medication, I would lay off the alcohol.

What's the longest flight you've flown to date?

One important point - I would let the airline know that you're nervous about flying as the cabin crew can then come round and reassure you every so often.

I'm fine with flying but don't like being the passenger in a thai taxicab on a two lane road. Going from Kanchanaburi to BKK scared the shit out of me. There;s be slow moving vehicle you gotta pass but head on colisons are not my thing.

I have, as the cliche goes, good news and bad news. The good news is that these fears can be overcome. The bad news is that it can take a while. About 10 years ago I had several major anxiety attacks while on a couple of domestic flights in the US; one was so bad they had paramedics and the full squad of emergency vehicles with lights a-flashing waiting for me at the jetway when my plane pulled in. For the next 10 years I wasn't able to get on a plane without a 1mg dose of Xanax at least an hour in advance; getting to LOS from LA required 3 doses over the course of the flights. I saw a couple of therapists who speciaized in treating panic and anxiety disorders, but the failure was mine, not theirs, since I stopped going after a couple of sessions. The irony is that I used to be a therapist myself back in a previous career.

Now, however, I can easily fly without tranquilizers, although I still take a couple of hits of Bonine to prevent the Technicolor Yawn (a problem I've had since childhood). My suggestions are 4-fold: first, see a specialist and make sure they are also affiliated with a psychiatrist, as he/she will be an MD and can prescribe an appropriate anti-anxiety agent to see you through while the condition itself is being treated. Second, don't do what I did and bail out of treatment early because it's taking too long; it's a condiiton that is very much treatable with a very high success rate, but patience is required -- it won't happen overnight. Third, permit yourself to believe that this CAN be cured. There is a significant amount of relief in knowing that there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel.

Finally, take a good close look at the rest of your life and see if there are more symptoms of unsatisfactory reactions in areas other than flying; the panic attacks may well be indications of a more wide-ranging disorder. In my case, the attacks turned out to be just the more obvious manifestations of what was eventually diagnosed as major depression; I now take 300mg of Wellbutrin every morning, and will no doubt be doing so for the rest of my life.

Best of luck. PM me if I can be of any further help.

I'm on the other side of this issue. I love to fly. Heck, I'd fly to every morning to work if I could. I get a rush from the whole travel experience including flying.

So, with that said, I'm just curious... Where does the anxiety come in? Concern about a crash? Just being 'in the sky' which is not normal for us?

This is no slight to the guys out there experiencing a fear of flying. I'm sure I have my own anxieties such as ordering meat in a Cambodian resturant. :finger

Why do ppl get scared of flying but the very same day they will get in their car(if they have one) and drive around at 60mph with cars on the otherside of road(2 ft away) doing the same thing. Now thats SCAREY if you take a few minutes to think about it!!!

You should not be worried in the slightest about flying, im not, i actually really look forward to the flight. I think its amazing!!

6 weeks to go

YEE HAA!!

During my induction as an airline steward - what a job. I shagged myself to a stand still - we attended lectures by a Captain who explained the theory and practice of flight. He reminded us that each landing is merely a controlled crash.

The safest part of any flight is at cruising altitude. The most dangerous is eating the crap food. BTW being pissed on an aircraft is a serious offence.

 to avoid all fear of flying and the chance of waking up and seeing this as you look out the window i would suggest sleeping pills and booze.....all in moderation of course...just enough to induce a coma............. :D
