Eva getting more expensive

Recommended Posts

Anyone else found that price for Eva are gettin more expensive ,i have been searching round for 2 flights for jan and april and the cheapest seems to be £540.

East west, thg and trailfinders all seem tha same .

Is this because of increasing oil prices or am i being cynical in thinking that they are charging more for them nice new shiny 777 they are flying from LHR-BKK ??

Reckon i will stay with them as i have 60k miles plus now ....

Matty

That price is spot on for January & April on Eva.

Prices for last 5 years in those months have been £495 via Westeast but the increase is mainly due to fuel costs and no other reason.

Eva have been receiving bad press re the 777 mainly because of the seating compared to the previous 747 being of vastly reduced quality.

Have to say i found the seats in economy much more comftable than the ones on the 747.

The cabin width of a 747-400 is 9 inches wider than a 777-300ER, but regardless, the seating configurations are designed by the individual airlines and the seats installed (usually) by the airlines, so it will be interesting to see if EVA changes it down the road if the customer complaints persist.

Matty,

EVA's prices will be higher in the first couple of weeks in April because of the Easter school holidays, exactly the same reason that they are higher during summer and Xmas.

Most of EVA's one-off deals are in direct response to Thai's offers since they are perceived to be the direct competition on the route so maybe something will come up, maybe not.

Personally, I feel that anything up to around 550 quid is good value for a non-stop flight, especially a Fri or Sat departure. If there is a good deal on at the time I have my travel dates sorted, so much the better but I wouldn't hold back hoping to maybe save 40-50 quid only to find the flights full on the dates I was after.

I have already paid 480 quid to travel with Qatar from MAN in Feb but looking at the dates for my June flights they are available for 406 quid incl tax through Thomas Cook so I'll also book them later this week. That takes care of the notion that prices are cheaper the later you book.

The seating in economy on the 777s is 3-3-3 as opposed to 3-4-3 on the old 747. I've not travelled with EVA on their new aircraft but have done so with Singapore on their 777ER non-stop from MAN and it was extremely comfortable with a similar seat pitch to that offered by EVA. It seems that EVA have had to do a bit of a balancing act with the guys in economy and premium laurel being the winners and those in the new Elite class being the losers.

Tom,

I have been trying for two weeks now to use my Qmiles with Qatar for a flight out in Feb/Mar and getting absolutely nowhere - they just come back flight not available!!

Have you experienced the same problem? Have to say I am getting a might pissed of with Qatar, especially after my drama over a lost ticket on my last trip.

Bill

ps Who did you book with for the £480 trip?

Bill,

I've never had a problem with Qatar ........ touch wood. I got my Feb upgrade back within 48 hours and will pop into their offices at MAN this week to pick up the upgrade vouchers and pay the extra tax (20 quid if I recall rightly). It may be worth giving their guys in MAN a call. I've always found them very helpful and at least they should be able to tell you on what dates the particular class that they book miles flights in is available.

I booked the 480 quid flight with THG in Swansea (0870 055 0342). Don't tell the booking clerk you are going to Pattaya and you might be lucky and get a couple of nights accommodation from them thrown in.

Bill,

I spoke to Qatar in Manchester today on another matter and mentioned your situation to them. If, when you call, you ask to speak to a guy called Sajee he will do what he can to sort you out with what dates are available for booking. I'm going to their offices tomorrow and will remind him again then.

Tom,

The guy I spoke with is Arshad Jamal. He was extremely sympathetic, unlike the London office, and has sent an email to Doha (copy to me) explaining the situation. Thanks for the further mention - will let you know how it goes.

I think Eva have put up their base price slightly, but the main reason in the jump in their price is the big hikes in the airport tax and other charges added to Heathrow flights in the last year or so. This has obviously affected other airlines prices as well.

The "airport departure tax" isn't really a tax at all, and certainly has nothing to do with Tony Blair and stealth taxes. It is a passenger handling charge levied by airports in the UK for all departing passengers. It's mistakenly called a tax because the "taxes" box on the old paper flight coupons was the only place where it could be shown separately from the actual flight cost. The additional tax and charges will also include any fuel surcharges levied by the airline; again nothing to do with the government.

January is Chinese New Year which spans a 2-3 week period until the first few days of Feb. depending on the lunar calendar.

Chinese all around the world are flying. And there are lots of them!

Cheshire tom,

Its correct name is Airport passenger duty (tax).

It was introduced by the conservative goverment in november 1993.

In the last budget Gordon Brown declared that Labour would freeze this duty (tax) and keep it at its current rate next year.due mainly to the airlines campaign against the recent massive increases.

In 2003 it raised £900 million for the treasury, good knows how much now.

If you think it has nothing to do with the goverment fair enough.

It is a stealth tax as highlighted in the last election.

The airline fuel surcharges are on top of the APD and only a few airlines including BA apply them.

Airport Passenger Duty and Airport Departure "tax" are not one and the the same thing. The duty part is a fixed amount of 20 quid for economy pax and 40 quid for biz class pax and has been for years. Airport departure tax (or more correctly airport passenger handling charges) is a separate variable charge levied by the airports, hence the disparity in taxes and charges when flying from, for example, Gatwick as opposed to Heathrow.

If you have a list of airlines that don't impose a fuel charge then it would be useful for other boardies to share that info. In the meantime here is a selection of the airlines that impose fuel charges..

TOM ,

your link to the list shows that only a few airlines apply the surcharge when flying from the UK.

APD went up last year ,very obviously you do not know the current situation in the UK.

Take a google look at last years UK BUDGET and AIRPORT PASSENGER DUTY and you will learn a bit about your industry and how it is "something to do with the goverment".

ranger,

From HM Customs own website:

Air passenger duty (APD)

Budget 2004 announces that APD rates will be frozen for a third successive year.

HMRC Budget 2004

The list that I linked to of airlines applying fuel surcharges only shows some airlines that operate to/from Singapore. It was never intended to be an exhaustive list of airlines that apply fuel surcharges. If you have any info on which airlines don't apply fuel surcharges then that would be useful info to share with the rest of the boardies.

Eva have been receiving bad press re the 777 mainly because of the seating compared to the previous 747 being of vastly reduced quality.

I just noticed this comment which I feel is worth a response.

I flew the 777 in Oct/Nov and I found the seating in economy to be very comfortable. Admittedly I do not have long legs but even allowing for that I had plenty of room and the back seat entertainment is also a vast improvement.

The food's shite but what airline food isn't?

We are flying EVA again on 31st Jan and that cost us £533 each.
