EVA B777 economy seats & award tickets.

Further to my Previous posts regarding seats & comfort on EVA's B777 aircraft: I have now flown economy on this a/c having asked for and been given a seat at the rear of the economy cabin. The seats are much improved compared to the B747 economy seats and the back 3 rows have a wider aisle. Generally an improvement I think and at the prices I won't be flying Elite again.

 

I am a member of various aviation related boards and one common thread is about the redemption of FF miles for free tickets. Many people have commented that they just cannot get an award ticket, the days concerned are blackout days, no seats are available etc. etc.

 

I have just applied for and got a free award ticket to BKK in Premium Laurel with no problems apart from waiting a day to see if a seat became available on my prefferred departure date. EVA reserved a seat on the flight 2 days earlier with a request for a change if a seat was released. They rang and confirmed my booking a day later.

 

I was surprised to find that the bill for taxes etc. (£128) coud not be paid by either credit or debit card and I had to post a cheque to pay this. EVA in London were very efficient & helpful and my e-ticket was sent as soon as the cheque cleared.

 

I notice EVA have just taken delivery of their 3rd B777, it is so new that Boeing exhibited it at Farnborough this year, this a/c is to fly to the US west coast and it is quite obvious that eventually the B744s will be phased out. My condolences to American passengers I certainly wouldn't fancy the trans-Pacific flight in a 777.

 

EVA have devalued the benefits of the FF program the mileage awards are reduced & gold card members no longer get priority baggage unless they are flying PL. Check the website for details.

 

Next year on my return I'll report on Premium Laurel.

I am a big fan of the Boeing 747-400, but two of the most comfortable transpacific flights I've experienced were on a Boeing 777-200.

 

You might find the following to be of interest:

 

Boeing 747-400: Wing span, 211' 5". Overall Length, 231' 10". Cabin Width, 20'.

 

Boeing 777-300ER, of which EVA has just taken delivery of the 3rd of 15 they have ordered: Wing span, 212' 7". Overall Length, 242' 4" Cabin Width, 19' 3".

Perhaps I am misunderstanding something herebut you start off by saying that the seating is an improvement and you finish by giving your condolences to trans Pacific passengers for having to fly triple 7's. Sounds a bit contradictory to me? :D

 

I personally would prefer to make the flight on a 777-300 ER than on a 747-400 Combi. :P

I'll be flying to BKK in October on a 777-300 ER and I'll take notes on the flight. Personally, I am hoping the 777 will be superior. It has a much better in-flight entertainment pacakge, and as indicated by this thread's opening post, better seats. Hopefully it all adds up to a better flying experience. I'll do what I can to remain objective. I will also fly a 747-400 in November, so i can make a comparison.

As it has been said in the past, the interior of the aircraft depends on the airline. I've been on 747-400s that have been completely refurbished with new interiors and have all the latest electronics, and I've been on older 747-400 that have not. It all depends on the airline and what they want to offer their customers.

It is impossible to do this in the elite cabin of a B777 without blocking the aisle. Evergreen on the B744 had two spacious areas to do this. Even with improved seats I cannot spend 12 hours seated without discomfort.

I have to agree it is great to be able to stand for 15-20 minutes at a time without "being in the way".

 

I sure am glad that Cathay(out of LAX) and Singapore(out of SFO) still use the 744 for the West coast to Hong Kong routes. Not sure about the A340-500 as far as having open room to stand for a while.

I understand what you are saying better now. I have never had a real problem with this as I seldom leave my seat during the flight.

 

On the last trip from SFO to TPE I slept most of 8 hours and only left the seat once for a toilet break. I guess it really depends upon the traveller and their preferences. :rolleyes:

Once again. The seats in Elite Class suck, so I upgraded to Premium Laurel class on my return flights. Unfortunately they are phasing out their 747 fleet, and I may have to choose a different airline in the future, if Premium Laurel takes a big price hike from the 2600 USD they now charge.

I drank as much free booze as humanly possible! 1luv Actually it was the return trip that this all occurred on. TGs had me worn out so sleep was not a problem. :clap2

I've stopped using EVA about 3 years ago, so I don't know if they have refublished any of their 747-400 or not, but I doubt it.

It seems that once an aircraft is assigned to a particular route it stays on that route except when it is down for maintenance. Across the pond for 12-14 hours in one direction and then turned around and sent back to its point of origin day after day.

EVA apparently plans to replace most, if not all, of their Boeing 747-400 passenger planes with Boeing 777-300ERs and 777-200LRs.

They are a launch customer for the B777-300ER and -200LR and have ordered a total of 15. It would appear their order breaks down as 12 B777-300ERs and 3 B777-200LRs.

At present EVA owns 6 B747-400, 9 B747-400 Combi, 3 B747-400F, 14 MD-11F and 11 A330-200.

I have yet to see what they will do with their older 747-400s. Sell them, convert them to freighers, who knows?

This doesn't take effect until October, so get in quick if you want your air miles at the old rates. :chogdee2

Hi,

Everybody raves about EVA. I come to Thailand every year, this time I decided to travel by EVA :D :thumbup I left LHR on the 18 Sept 05 they had just taken on the 777-300 The aircraft was new, but there was no seperate air vents, I can live with that, the seat was good, I was near the back with 2 empty seats beside me so I raised the armrest and had a good sleep, I was told if I upgraded to the next class and there was empty seats you could not raise the armrest, I was pleased the lady told me this. The main complained was the service and food on the plane, it was awful to say the least. I came back on August the 3 this year hoping it was only a glitch with a new plane :banana :party I was wrong. I booked my return flight with EVA 4 weeks defore travelling and got a code to give to EVA's desk as I had a open return, I was kept waiting for over 30mins as they told me I was not booked on the flight etc. I finally got it resolved. On the plane the service and food was crap. It took 20 minutes to get a drink of water, I did not go to the back of the plane to see the staff and get a glass off water as I wanted to see how long it took to get service.

I'll be travelling back to LOS next month, Guess which airline I will not be going with.
