Money transfer to Thai account

Recommended Posts

it cost me 25 gbp last time i done it and it took 4 working days from the uk

It looks like UK banks are bigger robbing bastards than Australian banks. My bank charges $22 (~9gbp) for a transfer.

Thanks for the info. I would imagine that from Australia it would take about the same amount of time.

Whenever I've transferred funds from my Nationwide Isle of Man account, they've arrived within 2 or 3 days at most. Nationwide charges me £20 a time, which as I transfer enough funds to last me about a year, works at less than 0.2%.

That is about the amount of time I am expecting. First thing I will be doing when I get there is opening an account with SCB. Anyone had any trouble opening an account with these guys? I'll be staying on Soi LK Metro does anyone know where the nearest branch is located?

Walk up Soi LK Metro to Soi Buakhao. Turn left (north). There is a branch of SCB about 200 yards along Soi Buakhao on the right.

My mate needs to send 2 million baht to pay for his house but he is waiting for baht to rise against the pound for obvious reasons. Can a broker buy him large amount or should he just send it as usual through his own bank anyadvise???

I use Citibank in the US and wire transfer to Siam Commercial here. The money is always there the next business day. There is a flat $30 US charge regardless of the amount transfered. The exchange rate always matches the rates shown on my Yahoo home page. Siam Commercial Bank has a small charge but I have never really found out what it is. I divide the amount of dollars into the amount of baht that is deposited into my account.

According to their website that is not the case. Here is what their website states:

Second alternative, apply at bank's branch

The applicant fills in application and present the signature to SCB customer representative and receive the two sealed envelopes containing Login Name and Password from the bank.

The notification of permanent membership approval will be sent by e-mail that the applicant indicated on the application.

I remember someone posting that this is how it worked for them. Perhaps it has changed since you set up your account. The ease of setting up internet banking with them is one of the reason I have chosen that bank.

i tried to register online with scb last saturday i set up a user name and password added the cards i wanted to check online and then i clicked the next step and it told me to ring their number 02 and all the 7's when my tgf rang them up they said i needed to go to the bank and get a username and password from them but with aydyha i typed in the visa electron number completed my details and that was it.

My Citibank account allows me to do everything online. The free bill pay service, account maintenance and wire transfers are all done online. Since I live here I have seen no good reason to use online services from my Thai bank. I can check my balance anytime with any ATM machine so why bother? I'm also a little skeptical about security here. ATM machines here are enough worry. :D

Yes, forget the trappings and trimmings of Thai banks' online systems. The bottomline is indeed SECURITY.

And IF MY MONEY MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARS, WILL YOU THE THAI BANK CARE AT ALL?

My gut instinct, completely untried and untested, is to trust - guardedly - only Bangkok Bank and SCM.

cheapest way to do it .. transfer to thai account that is :D, and this is how i do it .

paypal ..

1st off you need your USA or UK paypal account linked to your UK/USA details .. bank account, credit card etc ..

then create a new Thai paypal account .. link this to you thai bank account , in my case bank of siam .. (bank of siam i find quite good as i can topup the GF's phone direct in LOS if i wish from the UK on there webpage and also there interent banking is good and in english)

then simply send yourself a paypal payment from one tothe other and withdraw the funds to your Thai bank account

no bank charges are made .. it takes around 7 working days to get there this way

exchange rate is also better than sending from a UK bank as you get the paypal rate ..

last time i sent money direct from a UK bank to my thai bank they gave me a measly 64baht to the ££ and charged £25 ..

paypal gave me 67.5 baht to the ££ .. still not as good as just taking the cash with you and changing it at a thai bank tho but usefull to stow cash away in LOS ready for a upcoming trip

Anyone had any trouble opening an account with these guys?

th branch in Big C wanted a work permit off me .. soi went to the bigger branch on the junction of 2nd road and pattaya klang .. they wanted nothing more than a passport

internet bnaking was setup on the spot .. 2 forms(password & login) were given to me . these are changeable to my own memorable info on 1st login ..

any changed you make to your online profile such as adding a 3rd party account for money xfers (eg if you want to add a GF's account to send her $$ with ease) need you to take a form and ID into the branch where yo uopne the account to indeed prove it is you adding the info .. so very good security

I had a very quick look at doing it through PayPal. However I came to the conclusion that their fees are too high. Also if you are transferring from Farangland to Thailand send your own currency and not Baht.

Thanks for the information on your problem opening an account. I'll keep the branch you used in mind should option 1 fail.

Paypal SUCKS! If you ever have a problem you will find your account limited. In truth it is NOT limited. It is frozen. Then you will find out that there are no people who work there. Everything is done with computers. You will not be able to log into your account because it is "limited". They ignore emails from anywhere outside your account and you can't log into your account so the only way is via the telephone. At that point you talk to several computers. I wasn't even able to cancel my account. I ended up canceling a linked credit card and instructing my bank to ignore ANYTHING from Paypal. BASTARDS! :banghead
