Besty,

The situation is that the folk at Newcastle Airport are trying to get Emirates to fly into there and they have been doing so for some considerable time. Their has been no decision or announcement from either Emirates or the Airport, however, the earliest feasible date is 1 September.

Emirates expansion is a bit scuppered at the moment due to the situation with the late deliveries of the A380 and there are lots of places all over Europe trying to get a bit of the Emirates pie. Don't expect any confirmation until such time as the auditors from Emirates who are currently with Airbus have done their sums once delivery dates for the A380 have been confirmed.

the easyest way to go from newcastle is via amsterdam with klm/china air or sometimes via paris with air france.but these are never the cheapest option.if you are looking for june you should take the first offer under £530.00.same goes for the lad looking for a flight in feb.but you have more chance as its still a while away.the talk of the emeriates flight is good to hear, but i think this will still be £500+.and actually more hassle as at least when you fly the other two you can get a good overnight sleep

The announcement made by Air Asia was more a business thing than operational details, however, having done so it allows them to allocate/secure funding for the services.

There is much more that they didn't say than they actually did ........ they will start flying to Europe, China, India and that's about it.

As far as the hoped-for service to Manchester goes it's worth noting:

Malaysia has recently pulled out from the route ......... bottom line is that there isn't sufficient First/Biz pax from MAN to justify the service (the same could be said for any route to the Far East with the exceptions of HK and Singapore). Where Air Asia have an advantage is that they will operate to their own low-cost hub at KL and they have extensive links from there particularly to China/Macau which, given the size of the Chinese community in Manchester/Liverpool catchment areas is a big plus since there are no direct flights to any SE Asian hub other than Singapore at the moment.

I think the big question is whether they will go non-stop or re-fuel in the middle east. If they go non-stop on a 777er in a two class configuration then I think it will work. It really depends on what aircraft they can get their hands on in the next couple of months.

From my own personal choice if they have a decent biz class seat in their premium cabin then I would probably be happy to pay around 800 quid for that. I have no great need for airline food and vintage wines when I fly so I would happily dispense with those if there was a decent saving over the prices offered by Etihad and Qatar.

The one thing that does point towards Manchester is the link-up between Air Asia and Man Utd. That in itself would be enough to make lots of folk consider them as an option and could turn out to be a pretty shrewd piece of marketing on the part of Air Asia.

I'm sure more will come out in the next 4-8 weeks as to what is going on.

Judging by my expereince with Emirates from Birmingham, service is excellent, but they will not be the cheapest (not the most expensive either) but flying from a convenient local airport is certainly worth an extra £50 or so - can shorten your travelling time and also no coach/carpark/hotel charges before or after the flight.

This probably applies to other airlines as well, but get your flight booked as early as you can - if you monitor the price on the internet you can see the price rise - I try to book at least 3 months before.

Also, if you plan to travel regularly to Thailand, sign up to Emirates loyalty scheme - Skywards to get free upgrades etc.

Its about time us people from the North-east got another choice of airlines. Only have KLM - Which in my opinion r horrendous - China Airlines - Flown with them several times and found them very good, both in economy and business class. Been looking for flights for the Summer - Departing 21st July, cheapest I could get from Newcastle was £620 with China. (I know this date is the start of the Summer holidays but this is the only time I can go)

We always get our trousers taken down  when it comes to the price of the flights!

Been there, done that..... Wouldn't recommend the KLM option, they use a 747 combi ( 1/2 passanger, 1/2 cargo ) from Amsterdam to Bangkok. Worst flight I have ever been on. Have travelled Air France, you could maybe try that.

When they do start up Emirates from Newcastle, will the trip include a couple of hours stop-over in Dubai or will they fly straight to Bangkok?

All Emirates flights go to/from Dubai, they use Dubai as their central hub. So there will more than likely be a chance to spend some time looking around the rather excellent duty-free shops. Although you can have a beer in one of the bars at the airport, it is quite expensive :chogdee

They are in the middle of a massive expansion of Dubai airport. If you decide to fly Emirates join the Skywards frequant flyer program, I have and have so far flown with them twice to Bangkok, and after my next 2 trips will be getting near to a free return flight to Bangkok :D

Excellent stuff for the Geordies, Emirates are my favorite airline and the entertainment on board will keep you well entertained in the flights.

I also advise you to join the skywards program as they are pretty good with upgrades etc.

The flights have now been loaded to the CRS.

I've not checked any of the online agents but Emirates' own website is offering NCL-BKK at 451 quid incl taxes.

Hi guys I know some of this has been posted above but here is more info from the Emirates website.

Emirates to launch non-stop flights to Newcastle

Emirates Airline today announced it will launch a new non-stop daily service between Dubai and Newcastle in the United Kingdom, starting 1st September 2007.

This will bring the number of UK destinations served by Emirates to six, and will also be Newcastle's first-ever scheduled long-haul flight.

The new service will provide international travellers and shippers across Asia, the Middle East and Africa with a new direct link to the UK's North-east region via Emirates' across Dubai hub.

It also represents a massive boost for travellers and cargo shippers throughout the UK's North-east region, with a new non-stop connection to Dubai - one of the most popular tourist destinations and fastest emerging markets of the Middle East, and convenient one-stop access to cities in the Far East, Australia and New Zealand, Africa, the Indian sub-continent and elsewhere in the Middle East.

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group said: "We are pleased to be able to provide our customers around the globe with a new gateway into the United Kingdom, and better access to the North-east region - one of the UK's fastest developing areas for tourism and commerce.

''We believe there is a significant potential market, and are confident that this new route will prove successful for Emirates as well as for travellers and shippers in the UK's North-East. We look forward to working with the local community to boost inbound tourism and commerce, and foster strong trade and tourism links between the UK's North-east, Dubai and the other destinations we serve.''

John Parkin, Chief Executive of Newcastle International Airport, says: ''We are delighted that Emirates has shown such a huge vote of confidence in the region and Newcastle International Airport by introducing daily services to Dubai. Newcastle can now offer its customers direct services to one of the most important destinations in the world and an enormous choice of destinations beyond, on one of the world's leading airlines.''

Emirates' daily non-stop service to Newcastle will be operated by an Airbus A330-200 aircraft, with 27 Business Class and 251 Economy Class seats. It also provides a daily cargo carrying capacity of 14 tonnes.

Starting on 1st September, Emirates flight EK035 will depart Dubai at 07:20 every day, arriving in Newcastle at 12:10. The return flight EK036 will depart Newcastle International Airport at 13:40, arriving into Dubai International Airport at 00:05 the following day. (All times are local).

Emirates currently operates 91 non-stop flights each week, or 13 flights each day, from Dubai to the UK - five services daily to London Heathrow, three services per day to London Gatwick, double-daily flights each to Birmingham and Manchester, and a daily connection to Glasgow.
