So, how do you spell the name of this soi?

I've seen various references to the busy soi that runs parallel between 2nd road and 3rd road. I've even seen some spellings that I thought were "incorrect". However, a ride down this soi today shows that you can pretty much spell it any way you want!

 

Here are 8 signs along the street Soi Buakhow. Only 2 of them agree on the spelling.

If you "Google" ( Soi Buakhao ) with any other spelling { ex- Soi Buakhow } you get Google's spelling correction; which reads....

There's only one way to spell it and that involves Thai letters.

Everything else is just a phonetic approximation.

I hate the way Thai is transcribed into English. There really are no rules but about 100 years ago some idiot laid out some general principles which lead to true idiocy. Pattaya for example is often transcribed as Phattaya. You will see that on some official signs.

 

When I do it I try to make the english sound as close as possible to the Thai. In the case of Soi Buakhao I'd write it as Soi Boo Cow. Whatever

I would go with Soi Buakaow as well.

 

Regarding Beach Road, I'm sure the sign at the northen end says 1st Road in Thai but it's a long time since I've passed it on foot.

Booa Kao = white lotus

 

some might spell it Bua Kao

 

in Thai Booa is spelled with a B and U sound (as in cum) and a W

 

 

I never could understand why almost all Thais insist on spelling Eesahn, Isaan

in Thai it is clearly a Sara E that starts to word, and it's a long AH sound at the end

 

I won't even talk about them calling album alabum

 

or Sultan Soolatahn

 

or sauna saawnah

 

 

and Chonburi and Cholburi would be the same if you pronounce it Thai style

since a L as an initial consonant is still an L, but as a final consanant it's an N

 

Pattaya BTW, should be spelled Puttaya, like Putt-Putt golf, and since it's been spelled wrong for so long, most non-Thais pronounce it wrong, oh well
