Americans please keep on eating junk food

Returned from LOS on the 20th and was sitting on the twin turbo prop for my 90 miles flight from SFO to Sacramento when the United gate agent came on board and asked for 2 volunteers to give up their seats for either a free flight within CONUS or $600 in flight vouchers. I was on that offer like stink on shit. What surprised me was that I saw at least 2 empty seats on this plane that seats about 30. Was later told that the plane was considered overweight. The FAA has increased the average weight for passengers and based on weather conditions the weight limit changes per aircraft. Last year I flew 6 R/Ts from Sacramento to BKK at an average cost of $400. This year I hope to get the cost lower.

I fly strictly with United and 3 paid R/T's to BKK is enough miles to get me Premier Executive status. You then get double miles on all paid flights. United also will run specials where everyone gets double miles, so I'll get triple miles. You can also get 17,500 miles if you sign up for a credit card at no charge and get 1 miles for every dollar spent. Last year I paid for 3 flights and used miles for 3 freebies. On top of that I received $600 in discount vouchers for giving up my seat in Dec 05. This year my January/Feb trip was a freebie and I just booked a flight today for March that was listed for $784 in which I used a $200 voucher so it cost me $584 so I'm averaging around $300 for 2 trips so far this year.

Also when you have enough miles for a freebie don't use them immediately. Use them when you know that flights will cost more like in the summer or around Dec/Jan.

Well Emil, in my younger days I lived on junk food but now I can't afford it as often. Tonight I did, in your honor, have a double QP with cheese though I doubt my dainty 200 pound frame will cause you to miss any future flights :D

maybe not you in particular BUT if the plane was filled with 200lbs people it would bumb the weight of the plane by almost 300lbs causing 2 150lbs people not to be able to get on

And they'd get freebies like Emil did. Win-win situation, lol. :D

Hi,

I think the day is coming where people will be charged by what they weight.

Will not happen in America until they disban the legal system, cus right or wrong the Airlines would go out of business from all the discrimination suits they'd be hit with.

Not sure how widespread the practice is but there are airlines that do make a "large" person buy two seats if they cannot safely buckle the belt around themselves.

Hi,

Surely you mean a fat barstewart. :banghead

Haha. Yeah, but I gotta fat sister so I've been forced to be careful with my words around her and sometimes it just carries over. On the show I saw about buying 2 seats they called them "People of size".

I think its pretty wide spread. I really dont blame them. If you are so big that your ass takes up two seats to get the seat belt on then you should get charged for two seats

If I mail a package I pay more for a 10 pound box than a 5 pound box so I don't see why a large person should complain about paying more. I just don't see how the airlines can plan for this unless our size is determined when we book the flight. How can one buy two seats if the plane is fully booked and no one wants to give up their seat?

In the particular scenario I saw on TV it was Southwest where there is no assigned seating and they must have had open seats. Neither guy complained about paying for a second seat so I give them credit for that. On a fully booked assigned seat flight it wouldn't work unless the person sitting next to them was willing to give up their seat.

Paying by weight is a fun thought to consider cus I wonder what they would charge per lb and how much my flights would cost. At 200 lbs I know I'd be on the higher end of that scale.

If it was too much I'd have to consider staying home and that would suck. I'd be happier if they went by girth cus I'm tall and not so wide

Paying by girth makes more sense than purely by weight. I sometimes wonder how some of the people I see walking about town manage to even got on a plane, they are carrying so much extra weight.

When I was in Costa Rica on my last trip I was traveling with a rather large buddy. The ticket guy at Saunsa (?sp) air said they have a weight limit of 250lbs on their small domestic planes. He said if you are over 250lbs you need to buy a second seat. Then he said the flight was only 1/2 full so not to worry about it but to make sure to tell anybody that askes that he weighed 249lbs. They did ask his weight prior to bording. We said 249 and there were no more problems. I'm not sure if they would have throwen him on a scale or not if the flight was full. :finger :banana

I did think it was strange that the weight limit was in pounds and not kilos. Guess it is all American tourists that use this service.

Not sure about that Alan as in my example United had to fly with 4 empty seats on a plane that only seats 30. They also had to give two $600 flight credits to get 2 of us off the plane. Pretty hard to make a porfit if you can only fly the aircraft at around 87% capacity.
