As i am toying with the idea of geting a new truck visit, the lady in life wants to learn to drive( shes under the very stupid impression that shes gonna get behind the wheel of my brand new truck, which is never gonna happen until shes got some serious hrs of driving behind her), but shes gotta start somewhere.

so anyone used a local school? address and rates would be handy.

thx in advance.

In all of Thailand I have never heard a recommendation for a particular driving school. Just look for the shopfronts with massive numbers of traffic signs, walk in, see what they say, probably sign up.

Hmmmm. Isn't "Thai Driving School" an oxymoron? Like "plastic glasses", "Army Intelligence", etc. ?

Hey Kev,

A new truck? Now who could have I mentioned that one to me before :clueless

This might be incorrect, but I think you need a proper visa to have a vehicle in your name.

Not sure of the quality, costs etc but your better half can give them a call and report back on these schools.

thx FM, you are correct on the visa, as that is how i have also read the law, now heres the deal i have cut with toyota.

I will be in effect buying the truck on finance(b4 anyone shouts thats finance is not available without correct visa, read on)

Ok, i get the truck on a 3yr finance deal, pay the 25% deposit and 35 of the 36% monthly payments, on a no % interest deal BTW, leaving 1 payment to be paid in nov 2010,until that is paid the truck belongs to toyota not to me, and more to the point not to my lady. The truck is still registered under the toyota dealership name until i make the last payment.

once i get married i can own the truck once i get the marrage visa or if they dont change the rules when i get the retirement visa in 2009.

now, this was discussed on the day i was heading out to the airport, so i still have to get the full info when i get back, but for sure it is not the 1st time they have done this, as when he said it had to go in my ladies name and he saw my expression, this deal was was immeadiatly mentioned.

i will check it all out in a few weeks and get back to you on this 1.

always a way in thailand. TiT.

I've never heard of anyone making such a deal consciously but you are absolutely correct about the ownership being in the financier's name until the final payment. All a vehicle owner owns is the debt. In effect, you're leasing.

Not a bad idea. It never occurred to me, actually.

How right you are, that there always is a way.

as i am bored at work i decided to look further into the ownership deal on the truck, here is the blurb from siam legal, also on the www.expatmotors.co.th site under paperwork section.

TO REGISTER A CAR IN YOUR OWN NAME YOU WILL NEED THE FOLLOWING.

1. PASSPORT, copies of the photograph page and current visa page a car can be registered with any visa, tourist, non-immigration"0" "B" or retirement visa.( all copies must be signed)

2. deals with work permits.

3. EMBASSY LETTER. for people without a work permit you will need to visit your embassy and get a notary document confirming your name and address in Thailand. Typically these documents cost around 1,500baht, just explain to your embassy that you are purchasing a car and need the notary document for registration purposes. The immigration department can also issue a similar document.

so seems it isnt that hard after all, i have sent a mail to the UK embassy in BKK, i will see if they reply and update you when they do.

My wife is taking a driving lesson from this one as I write this. 3000 baht for 10 hours and she says additional 6 hours is 1000 baht. She's driving a new Isusu Dmax - 4 door which she says is nicer than our Tijuana Taxi.

I heard bad things about the one on Klang and the other other one I never heard of. She likes the driving instructor at this one - ex govt truck driver.

looks like we have a winner thx for that, just 1 more question, is there such a thing as a provisional licience she has to get,or just a case of, off we go?

I don't think there's an "L" permit for beginners. If she's with the instructor in his car, there's no problem -- at least for her, heh.

Owning a vehicle (once you finish paying for it) is not hard at all. There's not actually any important restriction.

Time was you needed all those papers including the embassy letter just to get a driver's licence actually (I thought you still do, actually). The letter is/was a major source of income for some embassies.

Off we go. She has no license, not even a moto license. My insurance will not cover her until she has a license from somewhere, even Zimbabwe. So I told her to take 20 hours, or 30 - I want her to drive to Bangkok and back with the guy - if she can make that trip - she can drive anything.

Note: She has 6 hours and has so far only used 2nd and 3rd gears and knows how to make turns. It's going slow, but better she drive their truck than ours.

oh how true!!! i got this gem in a conversation yesterday, " ok, i go learn drive, then after 2 maybe 3 lesson i drive truck", err no says I, you must pass test 1st, "why? she says, no-one else in pattaya have passed test except farang"!!!

out of the mouth of babes, :banghead

BTW, PT, love the idea of BKK and back as a tester, same same gonna happen here i think.

My wife took driving lessons in Pattaya whilst I was working in England. She did a driving test and passed and got her licence.

When she came over to live with me I let her drive home from the shops to our place. It was less than a mile and I was genuinely scared for my life. Went straight upstairs and looked in the telephone book for a local instructor to give her lessons.

After the first lesson the instructor said that she had very ordinary driving skills. It took 10 lessons to get her up to an acceptable level. That was about 4 years ago and now she is one of better drivers on the road.

So what I am trying to say is that getting lessons and passing a driver's test in Thailand does not mean they are capable of driving. She should never have been allowed on the road with her experience let alone be given a fucking driving licence.

You are 100 percent correct. Learning here is a joke. I'm not convinced that my wife's driving instructor is a total wanker though, but I haven't seen her drive. She has now used up 8 hours, can't drive straight yet, can turn left and right, shift through all 5 gears and park by pulling into the spot in forward.

When she is on the roads, driving at hour 14 I will go with her for a lesson. I do believe, that the majority of the Thai people suffer from some form of mental disorder. I like to call them Stepford people after the movie Stepford Wives of the 70's.

They seem to do everything on autopilot, including driving. Here is a perfect example. I'm going to upload a picture - the driver of this truck was Thai, and he parked this vehicle not more than 10 minutes ago and walked away. He had with him an entourage of Thai and Falang who all piled out of the truck.

Look at how he parked. He is a retard - no other explanation.

Last week we went to one of those ptomaine eateries 119 baht bbq on Suksumvit - I pull into the parking lot which is L shaped and at the bottom of the L on the corner so Thai Dumb Fuck parks his moto so that no one could make the turn to go down the parking lot. He is so far away from all the other bikes on the corner it would have required several reverses just to get around the dumb fuck.

Mindless fucks most of them are - not a thought in their heads other than the basics.

Eat. Park. Don't care.

Just got an update on her driving instructor, it would seem that she can't drive straight means she can't keep the car properly between the lines. The guy is a stickler for her driving within the lines.

Go fancy that - no one drives within the lines and she has one that wants her to do it 100 percent. He won't accept 90 percent of the time.
