What is a good, quiet, and classy hotel ~2000 baht in early 08 that is close enough to the action for a newbie?

 

Pool, balcony and AC are a requirement. Pests.. required to NOT be there

 

Also, any hints on where to book? Just go direct or online?

You'll have to book the entire hotel. Best include the buildings on either side and across the road to be sure.

 

And never go to Soi 6.

hah, I guess I deserved that. How about just no cockroaches crawling across my bed. I would also like a hotel staff that is very good about making sure to get IDs...

 

 

I was considering Tim's boutique, but it is rather expensive. At least from the prices I have found.

 

Sabai lodge also appears to be in the same range for some of the rooms (but I am guessing discounts are available)

Nah you didn't, I'm just being a smartass. I'm very surprised no one jumped in here. There are always a number of active threads of places to stay, though, so go through the posts and the archives and you WILL get help. I live in Thailand so of course this is one thing I'm no expert on, heh.

i am staying in Sabai Lodge in November, dont book online, send an e-mail requesting best price for the dates you want and you will get a good discount on posted rates, i am staying in Deluxe Ruanthai which is posted at 2950 (6 nov - 12 nov and 17 nov - 29 nov) paying 1850 a night.

Thats not long enough to get a reduced rate and mid January is after the peak but still very busy. You shouldn't have any problem finding a place as new places are opening every month and with your budget at 2000 baht.

 

I've heard that Tim's rooms have jacuzzis so if that appeals to you it may be worth the extra baht.

Try -

 

www.latestays.com for an idea of prices that should be paid or are being asked.

 

IMHO, If there is availability then they seem to offer the best prices - at least in low season.

 

Scandibar.com - has already been mentioned.

 

Any hotel in Soi 13 will give you a decent room, with pool for well under 2000 baht. Try the Sandy Spring or The haven (there are loads more in the archives).

 

Also for a weekly stay you could try negotiating with - www.lkpattayahotel.com - the LK group and check out MM's LK Metropole discount thread pinned at the top of this section.

 

You could also do something like stay on Walking Street at a 1K baht a night place - possibly Secrets and then join Tony's gym for a pool / sauna / steam hang out etc etc.

 

If you bargain hard enough you can get the best available for 2K baht a night ...

 

Try www.amari.com/novasuites - haven't stayed there yet but booked and it looks good.

(btw, that 2550 figure is HIGHER than agoda.com, and doesn't even get you breakfast. Strange.)

 

I know this sounds like an odd culture, but some places love to bargain and others.. well you need to know what you are doing and I am not looking to insult before I even step foot in their country!

I stay at sabai lodge, you WILL get a better deal if you e-mail them direct and ask for a price, i am staying for a week at the start of Nov and 2 weeks at the end and am paying 1850 a night for a Deluxe Ruen Thai posted at 2950 for nov.

Ked is the one who quoted 2550 to me. The question is if it is appropriate to ask for more of a discount? (considering agoda has it as 2436 with breakfast I wold guess the answer is yes).

A few things come into play when getting a lower rate than others. Dave is a repeat customer, he's staying for a total of 3 weeks and its in Nov a slower month which might have had alot of vacancies. You have never stayed with them and its for only 1 week. Also they might only have a couple vacacies at this time so they are not pressed to offer a large discount. If you were to contact them 1 week before you arrived and they still had an opening you would have a better chance of getting a much lower price.

 

That all said it doesn't hurt to ask them to match his price or something in between.
