Rayong to Hua Hin

Recommended Posts

dunno if this should be in the newbie topic or not but i thought Expats would be the most knowlegeable.

I'm currently living Near Rayong. the Misses wants to go to Hua Hin. Is there a car ferry from any of the east ports to any of the west ports Hua Hin ,Chomphon Etc.

it would save me a lot of driving just jumping on a boat but although I've been to the islands my side I've never seen any ferries going further.

any help would be good even if it's negative cos then I can stop asking around.

There was a hovercraft service a LONG time ago ( a decade maybe) between Pattaya and Hua Hin... it is certainly no more.

I think you are going to be driving!

No boats for the simple reason there is no money to be made.

Pattaya to HH is 6-7 hours by bus depending on traffic and weather.

By car it could be shorter but may depend on how well you know how to get past BKK.

If you have a car, it shouldn't be more than four hours, five if you count the food stop and the farmers' market stop every Thai woman has to make. You don't have to go right to Bangkok, you hang a left over to Pak Nam (Samut Sakhon) well short of the permanent traffic jam known as Krung Thep.

But yes, you DO have to go by road, there are no ferries.

Jacko is right about a long departed ferry as I researched this myself some years ago and my ex girlfriend was from Phetchburi so it would have been ideal for us as well. We used to drive.

I reckon you'll take about 5 to 6 hours. You should plan when you are going to skirt Bangkok (avoid rush hour). The drive to Hua Hin is a nice one and fairly trouble free.

I seem to recall reading about plans to reintroduce a ferry service between Pattaya and Hua Hin. I take it that this is still at the thinking about it stage?

Joe 4 hours dues seem a bit quicker than I would have thought. It is an hour to Pattaya from Rayong, then 2 more to Bangkok. I am in Rayong in Feb' and would like a side trip to Hua Hin. I'll study the map around south Bangkok for your directions. If you're right this may be a regular trip. Including food stall stops or the

" Look-market today !" ones.

Little One you are right. I did not factor in Rayong; I was thinking just from Pattaya even though the OP was clear. My error there. Yes, I'd say 5 to 6 hours from Rayong.

And that assumes the roads are decent of course. The bloody "highway" towards Bangkok can be like a drive down Beach Road at times.

But Bangkok shouldn't slow you down at all.

So, in decent conditions: Roughly two hours to get to the left turn around Bangkok, then three hours to Hua Hin -- driving time.

I THINK it's Highway 36 out of Bangkok, you can fire through Pak Nam, Ratchaburi and hit Highway 4 out of Ratchaburi. I don't have my map right here, I'll try to check.

Little later. Highway 34 (of course). So follow the red route here. Go north past Chon Buri, then over to Highway 34 towards Chachoengsao. At the intersection of Highway 3, hang a left to Samut Sakhon (Pak Nam), go through there and follow the signs to Ratchaburi and Highway 4, another left to Hua Hin.

Joe, you are little treasure- sunken chest an' all.

I have been to Samut Prakan, to a shrimp farm. spent a hour or two in two foot of waters feeling in the mud for those clam things. Not realising that the holes in the side of the pond were home to huge crabs.

That way takes you over the huge modern looking bridge, or would that be to further north ?

We will be in Pickup, so may take a bit longer.

Thanks agian.

I go over the big bridge, yep, that seems to be *the* main road. But bear in mind I'm coming from the north. There may be even shorter ways for you. You're just looking for the fastest east-west route from the Number 3 highways to the Number 4s. I'd just have to say, "whatever works".

A detour into town for food is sometimes necessary though. Pak Nam. Yummy. mmmm

And the rock salt is great for cooking. Take a sack home.

Trivia answer: Cheng and Eng were found by the American entrepreneur swimming in the river in front of their home in Samut Prakan.
