It's helpful during floods as well. :clap1

You haven't lived until you have fished off the steps of a Thai house during a flood.

Is there any flooding concerns in that area ? Seeing the flat land around made me wonder. My GF likes the style with a house on stilts.....up on concrete posts. Seems they like to gather under the house, next to the rusting out-of-order motorcycles, chatting and eating. Plus it is up out of the way if there are floods.

Looks like house is sitting up higher on dirt

Thanks Jacko, I'll send the link on to her, I know she only wants a single storey and we have been taking photos of some other features she likes. :beer

I believe we used house 8 for the plans with a few modifactionss and of course no garage. I let the

wife do it since its her place.

There are no flooding issues as the house sits well above the rest of the ground. Hard to tell in the photo.

It has a subtle grading to help with drainage and I spent quite a bit of baht trucking in dirt to raise the level.

Why the ceramic tiles on the outside verandah?

Somebody will slip and injure themselves on those when wet.

Marble column in the middle of the room? :wtf Are you Greek?

Location seems a bit desolate. Are you an Illegal Immigrant?

Your attempt at a wind up will not work here. Try it with someone else.

Nice looking house mate, will be looking at building a house in the next year or so ourselves in Weang Yai. My girls already got the land all we have to do is select a design. Goodluck mate. :wtf

Your welcome and thank you. Good luck on the new house just make sure you go visit home pro... :D

That will keep your wife busy for some time

Yeah mine seems to be stuck on the single storey idea. They are most certainly cheaper to build but I always liked the idea of sleeping upstairs. There is more land left available, and an upper terrace/balcony would overlook any surrounding walls and provide a good view/ sitting/ beer chugging/ chill out area.

We originally wanted to go with a classic northern style house on stilts all wood but the

cost was to prohibitive. We would have had to import wood from outside the country and

such. Most of the houses in my wifes village are being built the same style as ours brick or

concrete and western style looking. My wife wanted to keep building cost down as well

as utility bills down.

You didn't get that front lawn cheap from Wembley stadium did you ? :wtf

I like a few stairs too. Even Si's " Thai house" in my garden here at home, is up off the ground. :D

I wish might have lasted longer. Lawn cost us 2500 baht and over

half of it has died. Of course didn't help that they just laid it on top

of the rock hard clay dirt instead of breaking it up and tilling it. TIT

This farang is not a farmer so opinion did not carry much weight.

But in the long run has benefited me as now all I have to do is mention

the grass to my wife and she will listen to this farangs thoughts and ideas.

2500 baht to have your opinions listened to ? That is money well spent mate. :beer

Don't over play it though, it could lead to 3 days of silence. At times, that is a not a bad thing though. :beer

The funny thing is I really never have too, now anytime there is money to be spent

my wife keeps me well informed and constantly asks if I have any thoughts

about it. I am lucky in that my wife can make 1 baht into 100 she'll

stretch it so long 1luv Anytime we lose money and she thinks

it's her fault the guilt she feels goes way up. To me it was only 2500

baht and lesson learned. Mai Bpen Rai

  • 4 weeks later...

I seriously have to question the sanity of some of the farangs who come up here. They build a huge mansion and then complain that the wife has moved her family in. Why would the old retired farang and his young bride need five bedrooms and four bathrooms? In any case, I have pissed off some of them to the extent that they never even said good bye when they moved back to the farang ghetto. :chogdee I'd guess that four out of five big houses up here were built by farangs. The only one occupied by the original builder (payer) is by a Japanese who only visits a couple times a year.

Unless you enjoy communal living, and some do, make it plain and clear to your bride that the house you build is for you and her. NOT for her family. I am lucky to live in my wife's house. It is a two bedroom semi western style house built on a slab. It was understood that it is her house, BUT, if any of her family moves in, I will be headed back to the farang ghetto with or without her. My privacy over the past five years has been respected by her family. Her mother and father live in the next village and she is free to go visit them anytime she likes.

Nice house for the cost mate. The only problem i have is living up country, how can anyone live like a hermit and be happy. Each to their own i suppose but not for me,even though the cost of land is very cheap.Much prefer my house where i can get a profit from any sale too,as i suspect houses will not appreciate up country.

Seven years ago, if someone would have told me that I'd be happy living upcountry, I'd have told them that they were insane. I finally agreed to try it and went so far as to leave my condo empty for over a year. My trips to and back from the farang ghetto were fairly frequent for the first year but at this point, about every four months is plenty. My wife is busy planting rice so I planned a two week road trip to Krabi/Ao Nang. I spent three days in Cha Am and another four days in Ao Nang. I missed home and my two week plan ended up being one week. It's great to be back home.

Some of the reasons whe live where we live and in the style of house we live.

Small house cause who the hell wants to keep cleaning a big house. I got a wife and 2 kids

each have their own bedroom don't need more....and I don't spend 24 hours a day

in my house.. I spend most of the time outside...

I actually like her family and find them to be some great people so don't mind

living close to them.

The times we are gone if the parents want to use the house fine with me I don't give

a shit. IT'S ONLY A HOUSE. I do that buddhist thing you know don't get so

attached to THINGS.......

I enjoy living in the country and the farming lifestyle. I am not a city person.

But the number one reason to live in the country

I LIKE THAI PEOPLE AND ENJOY THEIR COMPANY.

Just because you live in the country doesn't mean you will live like a hermit

You know if people took the time to learn the language and interact with others

they might have a good time. But I know that takes time..... :( :P :beer :beer

Oh yes the other reason to live in the country.

TO GET AWAY FROM FARANGS..................If I want a western way to live I will stay in America......

I didn't move 9,000 miles away to a foreign country to go hide in a community with a bunch of other

farangs...........Fuck me that would be hell IMHO

What can I say I have gone Native................ :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Yes you have.

But I didn't come to LOS to hide away in the country with only Thais....

I think you can mix and match.

There are plenty of reasons for living here, other than avoiding your own countrymen.

Mine, well I have outgrown my country, or rather it has turned to shit.

I have little in common with many there, particularly the new generations.

Thailand offers a better climate and more reasonable costs.

The 'taxes' are tolerable.

Of course the locals can be agreeable, but you can find decent falangs too who have escaped home for all the same reasons.

Enjoying their company in sunshine and surroundings not available to me back in blighty, being with those of your ilk, is like comfort food.

And yes, that too, the odd falang meal goes down well. No little legs get stuck in one's teeth, teeth which you can get attended to here!

Good luck with that lifestyle, you seem to like it.

Hey Jacko thanks for the great post You said exactly what I meant to say about why I live there. Sometimes the

brain gives out a great big fart especially when I am writing and nothing sensible comes out :D :D :D

The older I get, the more crotchety I get. I don't socialize with the local Thais nor do I socialize with the very few local farangs here. About once or twice a week I go to one of my favorite watering holes and drink beer with whoever else happens to show up. Believe it or not, I enjoy my own company. I encourage my wife to visit with her family, BUT, at their houses, not here. I'm really not antisocial but I do enjoy my privacy. I have my computers and a well equipped eight meter by eight meter garage/work shop. I have a great Thai wife. She is a good cook, cleans the house, washes my clothes and the sex is good whenever I want it. I am content. My wife doesn't need to be stuck up my ass 24/7 so I am also free to take a road trip with or without her whenever I feel the need.

You have found your paradise and one which many a farang will envy.

Build a big house with five bedrooms and three toilet/shower rooms for what?

I've heard the howls of laughter from the village locals at the stupidity of some farangs who build a hotel sized house for himself, his tirac, and the Thai boyfriends children.

I don't know why people, especially Thais, insist on putting this type of tile on porches and steps. I rent and have a similar tile and have slipped 5 times. your feet just go out from under you. I finally put down bathtub tape and that helped.
