Just got back from Thailand , I have been there for Five months. Two weeks before i came home , my Nationwide card was blocked, I had plenty of funds in the account so no problem about that . When i contacted the nationwide in a panic because i had no money with two weeks to go and bills to pay, I got a nice man on the phone telling me that it had been blocked because of security reasons , Don't know why real because nationwide new i would be in Thailand for a while as i have been doing for a number of years , and i contact them before i go, In the local branch,The phone operative told me Don't worry as my new card had been sent to my home address. I told him some good as i was in Thailand , what do i do pop home and get it.He said basically not there problem. in a round about way, Anyway, what i recommend to Nationwide customers is take a back up card with you , then if this happens to you . ring Nationwide and ask the to activate your second card.I had my Lloyds card with me . Don't know why but that had been blocked as well. That also had funds in ..Hope this thread makes you think .I thought i had all angels coverd, second bank card diffrent from my nationwide account.

Yes, I always take two cards with me. I leave one in the hotel safe, and carry the other one. On two occasions, I've needed to use the back-up card.

However, when you are using the back-up you worry about there being no back-up! On my next trip, I will be taking three cards!

Used my nationwide card ok in march this year, after recently opening an account, this card is well used by travellers,I asked in branch when opening the account if i need to inform them when im going to use the card abroad. They said no, .. so now it makes me think.

I usually go over the top as far as security with my money is concerned.

3 cards credit/debit

thai baht

travelers cheques

English cash

Best combo Ive found.....

Three separate Nationwide Flex accounts with ATM cards

One Nationwide esavings account

Keep bulk of funds in the savings and cascade down (on line) to the three 'drawing' accounts each in £300 increments (the daily withdraw limit). Three strings to my bow if one should be damaged or eaten by an ATM. Effectively £900 per day when I need it. And if one is compromised in some way very little in it to be misappropriated.

& yes I too am puzzled by the OP's predicament as NW always declare no need to preinform them of travel etc.

You had money. Your bank refused to give it to you. When you contacted them they simply blew you off and told you that you cannot have your money no matter what. And you are mildly upset about that but you are still using this bank and recommending this bank to others.

That is what happened above in the OP, right? It's early morning but I think I'm awake?

Possible reason for this situation....Nationwide have been running out a new on line security update with a card reader/pin generator device for some on line transactions.

This has necessitated the issue of new cards (even if in advance of the existing cards expiry dates). If this was the 'security reason' and reason for the new card, you've been warned long enough and loud enough by mail and when logging in on line.

@ bronto

I had no problem opening the two secondary accounts. 2nd one I did on line. 3rd one in branch some grumbling about 'these aren't automatically granted' etc I explained the need, mention was made of initial deposit requirement, when I said take 10 or 20 thousand out of the savings account if that'll do it...they opened with a zero balance no problem.
