Hey Guys,

I am planning a trip for late this year, and I have never been to pattaya. One thing I would like to do is take a lady or two out on a boat to have some private fun. I am curious, can you rent a boat without a driver in Patts?

thank you in advance for the responses,

Don't hear much of this, perhaps there is some rule that only Thais can drive boats, most certainly the fishing boats can only be captained by a local.

Anything is possible but I would be very wary of one of them claiming damage to the boat and extorting money... like they do with the jet-skis. I did what you wish with a jet ski, but Pattaya was less built up back then.

Sounds like fun!

Yes, it is now possible.

Currently - but due to change TiT!

If you are the registerd owner, you can drive any private boat/yacht using any skippers license.

0-60ft = No need to have Thai skipper on board.

Between 60 and 100 ft is gray zone.

Above 100ft you need Thai licensed skipper on board.

To get Thai boat licence is very simple procedure and cost about Tb 12,000 all incl. Valid 5 years. We can asist you.

If you have an international valid skipper licence, not your own boat i.e. rental - up to 40ft speed boat.

You must have Thai licensed skipper on board.

Without international skippers licence - up to 24ft with maximum of 8 PAX capability, only inshore (less than 3km form beach)

However if you have an insident you will be considered guilty party.

For any vessel capable of carry four or less people - i.e boat, jetski, etc. No requirements from you.

Person renting to you is responsible for and must have: Insurance and registration.

Bakricono.com is now renting small boats with/without captain.

Without captian - Photos are taken before you take boat. Inspected and signed by you to validate prior damages.

With captain - damages is our problem.

We also have a lsrger 38ft PowerCat available - with captain for day rent, private trips.

Sailboat charters are available. Plenty of cabin space down below :chogdee I've done the overnight thing, it was great. Island hopping, cooking dinner aboard and enjoying some evening entertainment at anchor :thumbup

If you can't sail, just motor...

Correction: Update on Self drive boats:

I actually made the efforts yesterday to go talk to Marine Police and get latest updates. In light of two accidents last year:

ANY drive of ANY water vessel powered by an engine is required to have:

A) THAI skippers license

:chogdee Boat must have 3rd party insurance.

In fact (I pressed this issue strongly) it also means you need a license to even drive a Jet-Ski !!! However the Pattaya Marine Police choose to overlook this for beach rentals; provided the rental period does not exceed one hour and a slip as proof is presented.

It also means ANY Sailing yacht with a motor needs a skipper license!

Only remaining without license is pure sail boat, no engine of size less than 40 feet.

If you have a skipper license from your home country, with International Claret – you can apply for a short term license from the Bangkok Marine Police. Procedure takes about two days!

I bet it depends on who you talk to and what day of the week it is.

Interesting about the jet-ski, as a lawyer was citing this at the Expats club recently.

A farang was being squeezed for 'compensation' to a jetski his child rented and crashed into a boat, and compensation for the boat damage too.

The lawyer claimed there was no liability on the childs part as he was too young to operate the jet ski, and the owner was liable for illegally letting the kid use it. :chogdee .

Gulf Charters Thailand which operates at the marina behind the Ambassador Hotel in Na Jomtien offers sailing courses.

Why would you want to captain a boat when you can find a captain to do the driving and leave you to devote all your time to the lady? Any old fishing boat with a private cabin would work. These Thai captains know all the private islands where you can swim and enjoy your self. Maybe do some hand line fishing and cook the little reef fish right on the boat. The ladies love that.

There is a certain freedom about being able to take your own boat out any time you would like. Houses in Jomtien Yacht Club estate all have their own private slip and of course leads out into the gulf

Owning a boat sounds better than it is. I had a go fast Donzi when I lived in Florida. I then went to a bigger Wellcraft that had a cabin and was much better for diving. Both of them were holes in the water that you had to keep throwing money in. No more boats for me, especially here in Thailand.

I read the autobiography of Felix Dennis (guy who started Maxim magazine & came up about the same time as Branson).

He's only worth half a billion USD or so, not married, & does not own a boat nor a plane.

He said, "If it flies, floats or fornicates, it's cheaper to just rent".

I've been out on the Edina. Rates at their site http://www.learn-in-asia.com/boat-for-hire/

You can get it for 24 hours for about the same it costs to rent a jet ski for 20 minutes LOL.

It had a farang owner I dealt with as far as $$$ & told him the Thai crew were to mind their own business.

Mai Pen Lai. It was a great trip! Skipper & crew stayed upstairs.

Twats had no dinghy then (they might now). Anyhow, we went to Ko Rin & snorkeled off the boat, as he had to anchor 100 yards from shore.

If he has a dinghy now though it would be great to ferry some beer & food to the beach. Saw a 6 foot monitor lizard there, so don't think I'd like to camp on the island and why do that when there's a queen sized bed on board?
