Last night I was too lazy to switch off my laptop fully, so I just closed the lid. This morning I find that I cannot scroll so I have to use the right hand sidebar and click up and down. It sometimes also happens when I've been watching a video from say RedTube or YouPorn. When I go to another website directly afterwards, I find I have lost the ability to scroll. My solution is to shut down the laptop and restart. That cures it, but does anybody know why this happens, and is there a simple quick way to fix the problem?

Issues such as these usually indicate that you need a driver update for the touch pad. How to do that is not simple as it is difference depending on the brand of laptop and the operating system you are using.

I find closing the lid of my laptop, which may or may not switch off or sleep your computer, depending how you have set it up, does interfere with some peripheral functions. My XP machine more so than the Vista one.

But scrolling within a website often seems to stop....

You could just set up the computer to switch off when you close the lid......

Are you using a USB mouse? I do and switched off the scroll areas of the touchpad as I brushed them sometimes.

Putting the machine to sleep has been a problem for laptops just about since XP came out. Different machines, different cures (sometimes) just to make it worse and non-generic. Tell, the truth, when it does this, the best thing is just to reboot every time you come back to it. Taking the time is a pain, but not as painful as the annoyances. And yes Vista did improve it, but the BIOS can still eff up Vista too. Probably Windows 7 for all of that.

I have two laptops with windows 7, including the one I am posting from. Windows 7 still has some issues 'waking up' sometimes.

I don't have the option to switch off when I close the lid. The options are...Do nothing, Stand By or Hibernate. I'm set to hibernate. I'm using the touchpad, not a USB mouse.

From your replies, guys, there seems to be no real answer, but thanks for the input. It's not a big deal but would have been nice to know if there was a quick fix.

I have the exact same problem. Never happened running XP pro but my new laptop has Vista(SUCKS) and it happens all the time(including Youtube). I think it has something to do with the players being used at the various sites(Youtube, Redtube, etc...) to play the videos.

I've searched for an answer but haven't found anywhere that the same issue is touched upon. If you ever find an answer please post it or PM. Thanks.

This doesn't fix the scrolling problem but did you change the settings for what happens when you close your laptop lid?

This is for Vista but I did the same with XP.

CLICK:

Start Menu

Control Panel(I've got my Control Panel set for "Classic View" as it's easier to navigate)

Power Options(in "classic view")

System Settings(look for "Change what happens when I close lid")

After watching a video from "Youtube", or wherever, in fullscreen simply minimize the PLAYER(not the webpage) and click the "SPACEBAR" on your keyboard once or twice. This should solve the problem until you maximize a flash player again. Simply repeat when needed. Not a permanent fix but it beats shutting down your laptop every time you watch a video.

If anyone knows of a permanent solution(drivers already updated) please post it. Thanks upfront.
