Is 250B really the fixed rate to bring a bike to Koh Larn?

Is 250 really the fixed rate to bring a bike to Koh Larn?

I have taken my bike to Koh Larn on the ferry twice in the past, each time I paid 100 baht one way. I went today and after loading the bike onto the boat the Thai deck hand told me it would be 250 baht.

I know the passenger price went up from 20 to 30 baht per person, but a hike from 100 to 250 for the motorbike seems out of line. That means it would cost me 500 round trip to bring the bike, it does not make a lot of sense when I can rent one on the island for 200 – 250 per day. In the end I refused to pay 250 and they unloaded the bike.

Is 250 really the fixed rate to bring a bike to Koh Larn or were they just being stubborn about charging a foreigner more?

Renting seems the way to go on the island.

... or bahtbus.

Never had problem with baht bus there,

and so few places so few routes that you can easily go everywhere on the island

Actually, I thought it was fun to take a ride all over the island including to the peak of the large hill, some great views up there.

but a hike from 100 to 250 for the motorbike

what you are saying is that it has gone from £2 to £5 or 100b to 250b.

AND!!!

just pay it or do NOT.

really pisses me off when people complain about losing out on a few £, $ or thb.

i mean come on, whats wrong with you, did you not go on holiday to enjoy yourself...... get over it.

You want to save some money? Sell the gahdemmed bike, stop polluting my ears, get thousands and THOUSANDS of baht of spending money.

If 150 baht convenience fee for having the bloody bike is going to spoil your entire vacation and break your budget, the solution is pretty easy. Lose the bike, get a fistful of baht, and don't worry about skinflinting it for weeks and weeks afterward. Like like a human for a while, an actual human who doesn't worry about 150 baht being the difference between bare survival and outright starvation.

I am not on holiday, I live in S.E. Asia. I will pay the fair rate, my question is to find out what the fair rate is....guess some people need even the simple stuff explained.

Do you feel better now? Please don't make foolish assumptions, I am not on vacation here for a week or two. I live and travel in S.E. Asia full time for the last 5 years.

There has been a change in the fare system for the ferry to Koh Larn. I ask a straight forward question about the change. I am looking for a sensible reply like bangkapiboy's...you know … a reply from someone who may actually know something about the topic.

Looks like the people who rent you the crappy bikes over on Koh Larn are making sure it costs more to bring your own over, than to rent one of theirs!

I know I had to pay for my bike, and the truck it was on the back of, going over to Koh Chang, but that is of course a ro-ro.

Don't worry about it, I know people like to puff their chest when they have the anonymity of the internet.

If money really was no object for the wannabes they would be in the South of France and not hanging around checking out a chat forum about a budget location like Pattaya.

The assumptions, sir, are yours. I addressed Mr Sinbin, who seemed to feel that 150 baht was a crucial amount to the travel budget. You gave no such hint of thinking such a thing, and I didn't make any suggestion to you.

There are some people on this board who choose to always ignore the original question/topic and post whatever negative shit they can. I am not aware of the correct price but I can understand that a quoted price hike from 100 to 250 baht would be annoying, it would certainly piss me off and, yes, I can well afford it but its the principle of being gouged that I dont like regardless of the amount involved.

Spot on, I don't even mind paying a little extra as a “foreigner tax” if the boatman had said a price around 120 to 150 I would have paid it with a smile and not thought twice about it. However, to quote a price 2 and a half times higher than the motorbike they loaded before mine just not fair. My motto is to give people respect and you will get it in return. I treat people fair and expect it in return also.

I don't want to create a stink with anyone, I just want to confirm what the fair price is.

You just mentioned for the first time that a bike before you was loaded and charged at 100 baht. Although that guy might have lived on the island and be subject to a better price. Ask at the kiosk how much it should be.......

Not sure why you withheld the rather vital information that there were at least two separate charges being levied. jacko already has the best answer - you really should have asked. Transporting a bike isn't a place for dual charging, I don't think, that's my opinion. Unless they came up with a good one like a season pass or a resident's price as jacko suggests, you probably should have made a stink and forced them to one-price the deal.

No the assumption was yours ,I never said that 150 baht was crucial I said to cut us guys who do have to budget a break, and That I thought it common sense to worry about what is and is not a fair price.

If you cant get that then you too must be rich ,or at least richer than me.

I'm not screwing with your break, and richness has nothing to do with it. I'll stick with what I said: 150 baht is not something you SHOULD be worried about on a holiday, which taking a bike to an island is. If I were going to have to even give a second thought to 150 baht I simply wouldn't go in the first place. Frankly, on holiday, I EXPECT a lot of extra little niggling charges to come up. I budget for a whole bunch of them, it's part of the deal to me. I simply won't give even a first thought to 150 baht let alone a second one.

In the event, it seems the OP was more concerned about two (or more??) prices being charged to bikes than about the 150 baht. And I agree with him, it deserved looking into. I don't know how he'll do that now, I think he should have done it then -- NOT because he was charged 250 baht but because others may not have been. As he said, and as seemed clear from the first post, he wasn't asking for a 150 baht break at all -- nor should he, or you, or me. Price rises and unexpected charges happen. So what?

Joe, do you have any actual information to add to this thread? Have you ever taken a motorbike on board the ferry to Koh Larn? How much did you pay?

Perhaps a good idea to get a Thai girl to ask but make sure she is asking for her and her bike, not her and you and your bike !

That is the best idea I have heard, and one which I will use! Passport said it was 100B for the Thai with a bike in front of him.

Again you miss the point, and you seem to be very good at that, but I am concerned about how much I spend whether on holiday or not.The fact that I come to Pattaya for between 2 and 4 months every year means I do not think of it as a holiday but that's just me living my life and letting others live theirs.I try to give advice or at least my point of view not dig guys because I have more cash than them or have no idea how to budget.I don't know what your idea of having to spend "a lot of extra little niggling charges" on holiday adds to a post about the correct price of a ferry journey if all you can say is it doesnt matter to you and shouldn't matter to others ,when it quite obviously matters as there is a post about it.
