Somewhat old news from a couple months ago:

During the past six years, millions of passengers have been on at least 65,000 U.S. airline flights that shouldn't have taken off because planes weren't properly maintained, a six-month USA TODAY investigation has found.

Airlines contract about 70% of their maintenance work to repair shops in the USA and abroad, where mistakes can be made by untrained and ill-equipped personnel, the Department of Transportation's inspector general says.

Hey, if it works for Nike, Apple and others to save a few bucks by bypassing those pesky slave-labor laws in the USA, why not the airline industry too?

But no worries; what are the odds that you were on one of those 65,000 flights (in the USA alone) that shouldn't have been allowed off the ground?

Some of the rumors on the aviation sites say out sourcing it the reason for Qantas' rash of maintenance problems. True or not, I don't know.

My airline doesn't outsource-as a matter of fact,we're one of the largest MRO facilities worldwide.

Not only is poor maintenance an issue but also poor component quality.Combine those 2 and you're an accident waiting to happen.
