New Inn Bar and Restaurant Soi Khaotalo

Recommended Posts

Just thought I'd pass on this recommendation The new Inn Soi Khaotalo about 3/4 of the way up just after Wan a Bee bar.

It's under new Management an unobtrusive English guy and his wife. They have a small but good team of staff and their food is of a superb standard.

We go there 3 or 4 times a week and the food is English and Thai. The Chef is very experienced in both cuisines and it shows in the quality of the food and the presentation.

sadly my GF and I are usually the only customers there and although it's nice to have our own private restaurant we would like to see this lovely place a little busier.

So guys if you want to take the wife/gf to a nice place with good inexpensive food give it a go.

I used to stay on Soi 10 Soi KhaoTalo opposite the New Inn, must say apart from the 100 baht breakfast which is ok, the rest of the food on offer is very average.. If you are staying on KhaoTalo and need your farang food fix, i suggest Yaya`s Darkside Diner, next door to Pioneer Bar, imho a much better alternative.

Ummm read what I wrote!! Under new Management !!!!! hence New food and a new Chef. And believe me way above average food.

I know what is good and what is not when it comes to food and I don't reccomend average places.

Looks like I will have to give this place a try now that Cafe Uno has closed. Went to the New Inn a few years back and was not impressed, hopefully it has improved.

I used to make the short bike journey to Khao Noi to visit Cafe Uno when i stayed in the area, somehow i doubt the New Inn can reach those standards. Will have to ask my friends on Eakmongkol 4 to visit and report back with their findings. I wonder how long 'new management' have been in control?

If I remember correctly the place was closed for awhile and reopened towards the end of January this year.

The current management (I wont say owner as he confirmed to me he is just renting the premises) opened for drinks Mid April and he tested out the new Chef during this period by him and his wife eating her food.

I think the restaurant opened first week in May once he was happy with the quality and presentation.

We've only been going there the last 2 weeks and have been 7 or 8 times and are in fact going in again tonight.

Is this soi Khaotalo on the darkside Kung Fu boy? Means we can't go, you see. Just a precision needed for us tourists..

Ta

AC

lol no it's not on the darkside but it's the next Soi to Soi Kaonoi which is the start of the darkside.

Khaotalo is off Sukhumvit between Big C and Tesco Lotus other side of Sukhumvit.

Well this must be the 2nd lot of management this year. The placed was closed for most of January and then had a sign up saying something like opening with new owner/management.

Yeah I think it is

Well last night some English guy held a 23 Birthday party for his wife which was good business for them. And tonight there were some Brits and New Zealand families in there.

Apparently it used to be owned by the son of the former Chelsea director, Matthew Harding, whose helicopter fell from the sky in 1996.

I used to live near there and my mate owned the Pioneer bar roughly opposite and though we occasionally dropped in for a feed and the food was routinely good, especially the massive mixed grill, the place was always devoid of any atmosphere and ended up with the Thai staff having their friends in which of course rather fucked the place.

Not going to happen now the girls that work there all speak good English.

English owner and they all seem to have adopted the English way (well the good bits)

The European food rocks and their Thai Sweet and Sour is fantastic. A good mix of food. Just a shame to see them quiet most nights but they are getting later trade which is good.

Careful what shirt color you wear at the Newin Bar!

What do you mean by that?

They have patrons from all over the world.

The place never knew what it wanted to be. Bar to the left when you went in, then a bloody huge fish tank, then a pool table and then they tried to make the back table up on the dais a sort of restaurant. No wonder punters didn't have a clue !

Some Thais had a go at it the last I heard and had huge banners out with the offers on etc. What it really needs is to feed off the UK grub trade and become a boozer with food as a restaurant is never going to work. Then again, most folk out there are looking for beer offers and could not give a fuck about anything else. When you need to run aircon and have a place which should have at least another half dozen rooms, then the maths for cheap drinks doesn't work.

If I owned it, I'd extend out back, stick some extra serviced rooms on and make them nice alternatives to renting a small town house or so forth. Plenty of land out back to put in some facilities. Then again, it might just be better to bulldoze it and start again as it is very poorly designed as a whole, though nice bogs.

Whoever has it needs to get word out to the bars opposite and up the Soi and some menus printed and distributed around Eakmongkol 4, the estate next to it. Perhaps even as far as the other estates.

Just got back from the New Inn. Arrived about 19.30, place was deserted (Sat night!) with all Thai staff playing pool and the owner sitting staring into space. Must say the Chef looked the biz in his uniform!

I ordered the Pork Schnitzel advertised with sautee potatoes and onions, missus had Gaeng Ba Gung, Yum Wun Sen and rice. She told me the Thai grub was fine but not "we must come back again it's delicious" fine. My Schnitzel was done in batter not breadcrumbs but apart from that was ok. The sautee potatoes were not, onions ok and the meal came with nice garden peas (not the cheap Chinese ones) and a black pepper gravy.

I wouldn't have minded paying more than the 180 baht it cost if the Schnitzel had come with maybe more potatoes (sauteed properly), some carrots and apple sauce, as it was I felt sorry for the plate, there was so much unused space on it!! (Oh, and if it was done properly..... in breadcrumbs!)

All told 545 baht for my Schnitzel, the Thai grub, one Tiger and a Spy Classic. The staff were very attentive and level of English was ok. The owner made no move to come say hello and welcome, and when we left the place was once again deserted........ surely spoke volumes for the place at prime time on a Saturday evening.

Would I go back? Hmmm, maybe but I will not be counting the days......... nothing special.

I was going to try the Schnitzel but haven't got around to it.

I like the Meatballs home made by the chef very spicy and filling.

Had a large juicy piece of gammon in there Friday 2 Eggs pineapple ample chips and peas.

My missus loves it there so we go about 3 times a week. And usually we are the only customers which is a shame.

The owner is a quiet chap but I usually have a good conversation with him.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip. Always nice to have different places to visit and know you'll get a fair deal.
